Prince's Influences. This could be in two different forums, but I really like it here.
This is not about samples, but influences or blatant rip-offs. I am just playing The Empyre's Striking Back (GREAT electro rap track that is too advanced for it's years, blending rap and electro and guitar) that features a beat that could be pre-vintage Prince 1987; the beat resembles Housequake, including the handclaps in the break at 3:45. It's quite funny to hear where Prince might have or has nicked stuff. Like playing Aretha Franklin's Rock Steady and Prince's Daddy Pop back to back and hear what you end up with.

Now that is the level of detail I am looking for... Like; the intro to No, the sound scapy sound that opens the song?
That is not even Prince! (Okay, so maybe that IS a sample, but just one people are not aware of) It's a part of music by Delia Derbyshire, as used in one of her projects. http://www.delia-derbyshire.org This site has got a few MP3's, freely downloadable that resemble that No intro soundscape.
I think the connection here is through Ingrid Chavez, that might have used the intro soundscape as backing for her Rain Is Wet-poem and Prince thought it was her's or something.

As the MP3 page's link to the Tutanchamun soundclip does not take you to the right soundclip... http://music.hyperreal.org/delia/ The Delia's Theme clip is somewhat like Clouds (the No soundscape)[Edited 6/24/07 10:24am]

Those are the obvious ones.
Over the years some of his influences were slightly unknown. I never saw the likes of Graham Central Station, The Delfonics or Carlos Santana mentioned in lists of inspirations until he started playing their songs. I love the fact he paid tribute to bands like The Staple Singers and the Temptations.

Well, Jackson 5 AND Barbra Streisand of course. The fact he heard them on the radio does not mean they were an influence. It also does not mean weren't. I just do not think they were an influence in the way I meant it. The Jackson 5 sure made their mark on popular culture, but so did Diana Ross. So I suppose the Jackson 5 was as big an influence on Prince as Diana Ross and the Supremes.

But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.
