the birth of the SEX song...

hmmm

So "Close the Door" comes across my ITunes today (not to mention my Betty Davis cd's finally got cracked open) & it got me thinking - what popular song was the first sex song in each genre? I know people always sang about love, relationships, life... but what particular songs were specifically about sex? & in which genre was the first sex song born?

I'm thinking it's gotta be the blues, though everything kinda started there so it's kinda moot lol but still, I'm just curious. smile

Back to Teddy P., the sensual/"I wanna do you" song was definitely his thing at his time (late 70's/early 80's) & while he's widely known for it, others paved the way for that (what year was that Marvin Gaye "Head" song???) lol When did the Isley's go from nice R&B to fuckery? Was Barry White ever NOT in the bedroom? Hell, Betty Davis' first album was 1973! I'm not going back far enough...

So the genre's I'm thinking about (forgive me if all can't be considered genre's):

Blues
R&B
Rock
Funk
Rap
Pop/dance
Country

Umm, are there folk songs about sex?? lol Whatever other genre's y'all can think of...

Is this an impossible question, oh knowledgeable ones of the Org? hmmm tA, I'll be looking for you to shine some light 'cause I know you know biggrin

Yea, I could just reasearch it, but it's much more fun to throw it out there & see what comes back. Should be interesting... I think smile

That's a hard one to pin down girlfriend.

I'll give you a few examples from around the '20s in the Female Blues category (they weren't holding back).

Nobody In Town Can Bake A Sweet Jelly Roll Like Mine - Bessie Smith

In a bakery shop today
I heard Miss Mandy Jenkins say
She had the best cake, you see
And they were fresh as fresh could be
And as the people would pass by
You would hear Miss Mandy cry

Nobody in town can bake a sweet jelly roll like mine, like mine
No other one in town can bake a sweet jelly roll so fine, so fine
It's worth lots of dough, the boys tell me so
It's fresh every day, you'll hear 'em all say
Don't be no dunce, just try it once
You'll be right in line

Somebody told me I made the best jelly roll in town, I say in town
You must admit that I'm a jelly roll bakin' hound, bakin' hound
Good jelly roll, jelly roll is so hard to find
We always get the other kind
Nobody in town can bake a sweet jelly roll like mine

Somebody told me I made the best jelly roll in town, I say in town
You must admit that I'm a jelly roll bakin' hound, bakin' hound
Good jelly roll, jelly roll from a bakery shop
Will surely make a pool frog hop
Nobody in town can bake a sweet jelly roll like mine, like mine

I'm A Might Tight Woman - Sippie Wallace

I come to you, sweet man
And I'm, I'm fallin' on my knees
I come to you, pretty papa
Fallin' on my knees
Ask if you don't have nobody
Won't you kindly take me please

Cause I'm a mighty tight woman
I'm a real tight woman
Lord I'm a jack of all trades
I can be your sweet woman
Also be your slave
Lord I can do things so good
You will swear that I behave

I got all of them sayin'
that I'm tight in everything I do
I got all the men cryin'
I'm a broad that will never be blue
What I need is a good man
and I will make him happy too

If you're a married man
you ain't got no business here
Cause when you're out with me
I might make your little wife shed a tear
Cause I'm a mighty tight woman
There ain't nothing, nothing that I fear

Frisco Town - Memphis Minnie

That old 'Frisco train makes a mile a minute
That old 'Frisco train makes a mile a minute
Well, in that old coach, I'm gonna sit right in it
I'm on my way, to 'Frisco town

You can toot your whistle, you can ring your bell
You can toot your whistle, you can ring your bell
But I know you been wanting it by the way you smell
I'm on my way to 'Frisco town

There's a boa constrictor and a lemon stick
There's a boa constrictor and a lemon stick
I don't mind being with you but my mama's sick
I'm on my way to 'Frisco town

I would tell you what's the matter, but I done got scared
I would tell you what's the matter, but I done got scared
You got to wait now, until we go to bed
I'm on my way to 'Frisco town

If you was sick, I wouldn't worry you
If you was sick, I wouldn't worry you
I wouldn't want you to do something that you couldn't do
I'm on my way to 'Frisco town

Well, if you want it, you can get it, and I ain't mad
Well, if you want it, you can get it, and I ain't mad
If you tell me this is something that you ain't never had
I'm on my way to 'Frisco town

Look-a here, you get mad everytime I call your name
Look-a here, you get mad everytime I call your name
I ain't never told you that you couldn't get that thing
I'm on my way to 'Frisco town

I woke up this morning about half past five
I woke up this morning about half past five
My baby turned over, cried just like a child
I'm on my way to 'Frisco town

I got something to tell you, I don't want to make you mad
I got something to tell you, I don't want to make you mad
I got something for you, make you feel glad
I'm on my way to 'Frisco town

Look-a here, look-a here, what you want me to do
Look-a here, look-a here, what you want me to do
Give you my jelly, then die for you
I'm on my way to 'Frisco town

I got something to tell you, gonna break your heart
I got something to tell you, gonna break your heart
We been together so far, we gotta get apart
I'm on my way to 'Frisco town

Ray Charles-What I'd Say- This song included the first orgasmic refrain.

Hey mama, don't you treat me wrong
Come and love your daddy all night long
All right, hey, hey, all right now

See the girl with the diamond ring
She knows how to shake that thing
All right, hey, hey, Mmm, all right now

Ahhh, Ohh, Ahhh, Ohh, Ahhh, Ohh, Ohh

Make me feel so good, make me feel so good right now
Make me feel so good, make me feel so good right now
Make me feel so good, make me feel so good

Mmm, see the girl with the red dress on
She can do the dog all night long
All right, hmm what'd I say, tell me what'd I say

Tell me what'd I say, tell me what'd I say right now
Tell me what'd I say, tell me what'd I say right now
Tell me what'd I say, tell me what'd I say

Ahhh, Ohh, Ahhh, Ohh, Ahhh, Ohh, Ohh

It's all right, It's all right right now
Baby, it's all right, Baby, it's all right right now
Baby, it's all right, Oh yeah!

Baby shake that thing, baby shake that thing right now
Baby shake that thing, baby shake that thing right now
Baby shake that thing, well I feel all right

While it's not the first, the lyric that comes to mind when I think of early blatantly sexual references is Robert Johnson's 1937 tune, Travelling Riverside Blues:

If your man gets personal, want to have your fun
If your man gets personal, want to have your fun
Just come on back to Friar's Point, mama, and barrelhouse all night long

I got womens in Vicksburg, clean on into Tennessee
I got womens in Vicksburg, clean on into Tennessee
But my Friar's Point rider, now, hops all over me

I ain't gon' to state no color, but her front teeth is crowned with gold
I ain't gon' to state no color, but her front teeth is crowned with gold
She got a mortgage on my body, now, lien on my soul

Lord, I'm goin' to Rosedale, gon' take my rider by my side
Lord, I'm goin' to Rosedale, gon' take my rider by my side
We can still barrelhouse, baby, 'cause it's on the river side

Now you can squeeze my lemon till the juice run down my...
(Spoken: till the juice run down my leg, baby, you know what I'm talkin' 'bout)
You can squeeze my lemon till the juice run down my leg
(that’s what I’m talkin’ about now)

But I'm goin' back to Friar's Point, if I be rockin' to my head

Whenever I listen to that song closely, it actually sounds like he said, "till the juice runs down my dick" at one point. I could easily be hearing things. lol
