Low ticket sales cause Clarkson to shelve tour http://news.yahoo.com/s/n...larkson_dc
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Pop singer and "American Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson may want to consider singing the blues with all the turmoil in her life lately. After feuding with her label for months over artistic control of her upcoming album, "My December," and abruptly firing her long-time manager this week, the singer pulled the plug on a summer concert tour on Thursday due to poor ticket sales. "In the craziness of the music business, performing is what I look forward to doing the most, so it really is disappointing for me to have to tell you that I won't be coming out to tour this summer," Clarkson said on her Web site (www.kellyclarkson.com). "The fact is that touring is just too much, too soon," said Clarkson, 25, who has sold an estimated 11 million records worldwide. Clarkson promised fans she'd "get back out there as soon as is humanly possible." Michael Rapino, chief executive officer of concert promotion company LiveNation, said, "Ticket sales have not been what we anticipated and we came to the realization that we had bit off more than we could chew." The singer has been embroiled in a high-profile dispute with Sony BMG boss Clive Davis, credited with cultivating stars like Whitney Houston, over her new album, "My December." Clarkson recently told "Elle" magazine that she rejected Davis' offer of $10 million to remove five songs from the album. "My December," originally due out in April was delayed due to the falling out. It is set to be released on June 26. The new album's first single, "Never Again," her seventh top-10 hit, fell six places to No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart Thursday. Clarkson's debut album, "Thankful" (2003) sold 2.6 million units in the United States, while her follow-up "Breakaway" (2004) sold about 5.8 million units, according to Nielsen Soundscan.

Her career is over.
Once you go against the big guys, they prefer to lose money while they kill your market value. If you're someone like Prince you can ride it out until fresh management comes in. Kelly Clarkson is no Prince.

Kelly Clarkson is no Prince. dunno bout that, she has a pretty decent size fan base... and her talent is growing. I think its just a little too soon to be feuding with the recording companies... but thats her deal. best of luck to her I am a Rail Road, Track Abandoned

Yeah, while I'm not a fan of Kelly I kinda give it up for a woman who tells Clive to bite her ass and says this is the album she wants to release. Good for her.
Maybe it won't sell maybe its shit, but at least shes trying to be honest. [Edited 6/14/07 23:56pm] The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

Kelly is wise enough to know that the pop-rock sound is working great for her. Singing pop love ballards won't cut it in the industry (excluding country music of course). With that said, WTF is Clive Davis thinking? Is he trying to make Kelly Clarkson into a "white Whitney Houston"?!?

I have a lot more respect for an artist like Kelly Clarkson for being different with her creativity than I'll ever will with these young "lip-synching bound divas" that wanna fit the mold of Beyonce & Britney.....and STILL sound freaking wack!!!! She should be able to...Heck, even Wendy & Lisa were at one point negotiating sponsorship for a tour after girl bros. was released...if they can have someone take their calls then Clarkson (one of the biggest acts around) should be able to secure a deal. Space for sale...

Wait! That broad turned down 10 MILLION to take off 5 songs? She's a fool! Take the money and run and/or release the removed songs at a later date or perform them in concert. Make Afros not War

I sure hope this is a sign of things to come for all these cookie cutter singing contest winner American Idol poseurs.
Kelly doesn't have great songs. She hired a great band and a producer who compressed the hell out of average tunes to make them radio and pop friendly. Since you been gone had a good hook. Whoop de whoo. Clive Davis on the other hand is a SEASONED hit maker who knows what he is doing. He knows a good song. Period. I can't believe you all are disrespecting this man. Her album is probably half baked shit. I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

. [Edited 6/15/07 0:08am] that actually isn't such a bad idea. i mean the girl's clearly got a good voice, and in a smaller venue she could have the chance to do more with it than the usual pop rock shtick.

I consider her the most talented of the vomit heaps spewed forth by the AI machine, and even then she's nothing to write home about. Plus, she's flat on the climx for "Since You Been Gone". You'd think with all the fancy technology, somebody could've fixed that. I know I can't be the only bothered by that. [Edited 6/17/07 17:08pm] "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Not surprised. Who would spend money to see Kelly Clarkson??

Tickets at Air Canada Center were $70-100 for shitty seats (like 70th row or something). She really thought she could charge that kind of money?

Her album is probably half baked shit. Clive Davis USED to be a credible hitmaker and producer. Nowadays, he's responsible for flooding the market with crap acts that have to no talent and little fanbase. If Kelly had developed a fanbase the old fashioned way, they would've bought a ton of tickets. Kelly Clarkson doesn't have fans of her so much as she has fans of the song "Since U Been Gone."

Why bother? At $70-$100 a pop, all she's going to hear is crickets chirping.
