The footage of Otis is historic, as is the Hendrix (for the obvious reason), as a product of the 60's this music was the soundtrack to my childhood as well.

It's too bad it took most of my life to actually see the film footage. The Otis Redding footage is not just historic, it's beautiful, soul by one beautiful human being with Booker T and the MGs just tight as hell (because they all just came back from the Stax tour in Europe).

Oh yeah, it's one of the signs of the apocalypse that this soundtrack is being sold in Starbucks...

I have only seen what they aired on the VH1 special. Otis was amazing on the show.

Wowugotit

wouldn't it have been great to have been there? I wasn't born for five more years (1972) but I would have loved to have been in the audience and saw Janice and Jefferson Airplane, Jimmy and The Who. Wow.....I have never done acid but with my luck i would have been one of those people in the "bad trip teepee".

Some screen caps from the...

...Jimi Plays Monterey DVD

Monterey - Eric Burdon & The Animals

The people came and listened
Some of them came and played
Others gave flowers away, yes they did
Down in Monterey, down in Monterey

Young gods smiled upon the crowd
Their music being born of love
Children danced night and day
Religion was being born
Down in Monterey

...The Byrds and The Airplane did fly

...Ravi Shankar's music made me cry

...The Who exploded into fire and light

...Hugh Masekela's music was as black as night

...The Grateful Dead blew everybody's mind

...Jimi Hendrix baby believe me set the world on fire

...His majesty Prince Jones smiled as he move among the crowd

Ten thousand electric guitars were groovin' real loud, yeah

If you wanna find the truth in life
Don't pass music by
And you know I would not lie
No, I would not lie
No, I would not lie
Down in Monterey

Alright!

Three days of understanding
Of moving with one another
Even the cops grooved with us
Do you believe me? Yeah!

Down in Monterey
Down in Monterey
Down in Monterey
Down in Monterey

I think that maybe i'm dreamin'
.

Jimi literally waiting his turn...

...to set the stage on fire.

Random shots...

confuse...

...I've seen somebody borrow these moves before. I just can't put my finger on it.

Don't believe these...

...have been absorbed yet.

These reaction shots...

...pretty much say it all about the reaction to the Jimi Hendrix performance.

The first two are during The Wind Cries Mary.
(Can you say, "Clean up on Row 2"?)

The next two are during the aftermath of the fire sacrifice of Wild Thing.
(What just happened here?)

From humble beginnings...

...to one of the greatest acts in music history.

headbang Rock On Brotha TA! This is what I am talking about. This images you included embodied the true spirit of what Monterey was about musically. For those who haven't seen the film, I advise your asses to get the DVD pronto.

This artist in the beginning of Jimi Plays Monterey has always stood out in my mind from my childhood.

He starts throwing paint on a wall and you're like, confuse what the hell? - Next thing it's a brilliant illustration that is just beautiful, I need this Hendrix painting as a print, it's really influenced me.

Thx for the brilliant (as usual) post t/A

I remember Jerry Garcia joking about how THRILLED he was to go on in between The Who and Jimi Hendrix.

The old story of Jimi and the Who arguing about who goes on first (and what Jimi did in his performance) is legendary, but I recently heard that Jimi stole Pete's guitar and burned it that night. I don't know if that's true.

Nothing like being a "buffer-band" between Hendrix and The Who. smile

Really? Where did you hear that?

Regarding the performance order, according to Pete Townsend, "We came on after him, and all I could do was just stand there and strum."

I'm trying to remember if it was a reliable source. Seems that would have ended up as part of the legend if it were true.

But it would add to the legend of him passing the burnt guitar to Zappa, and the guitar would have had a third superstar owner!

edit--they're debating it here

http://www.youtube.com/wa...FUS7FlYE_g

again, I don't know that it's true
