While we're waitin for SoulAlive, here's my two cents....

I actually really like the movie, I used to have it on VHS and I bought the DVD as soon as it was released...true, nobody's gonna mistake it for a great film (Maurice White tried to distance himself from it), and it does have some cornball moments...but its' message about how the industry works was true then, and it's even more relevant today. It flopped when it was released, though one review at the time wondered if the film would sink because it was too open in its'portrayal of the inner workings of the music business. Maybe moviegoers didn't want to know about that stuff back then (basically, the issues brought up in books like Fredric Dannen's "Hit Men" are brought up in the film).

It does have some great footage of Earth Wind and Fire throughout. I especially like the opening shots of the group in the recording studio! I always see it selling for anywhere between $5.99 and 9.99-- IMO, If You're an Earth Wind and Fire fan , it's worth it....

FINALLY, a review thumbs up!

Yeah, part of my reluctance was becoz of the scary reviews in Amazon, they DOOMED the movie,,,probably becoz of the very same reason you mentioned.

I also get from some of the positive reviews that the movie has "independent" feel to it(which I'm a sucka for nod).

I've never seen it, but all of the critics said (at the time) that it was horrible. I don't think it got one good review.

SoulAlive

As Paligap pointed out,the film is no masterpiece. It's obviously very low-budget.One thing that really annoys me is,there are certain scenes that seem to go on forever....after awhile, you'll be pleading "Let's move on please!" lol The other problem is....EW&F's songs aren't used effectively!! I was shocked when I first saw it.Well-written songs like "Shining Star" and the title track are used as incidental background music! Even worse, on several songs ("See The Light","Reasons" and "Yearnin Learnin"),they use instrumental versions!! EW&F clearly poured their heart and soul into writing these classic songs, and the film doesn't even take advantage of the strong lyrics, which could have been used to advance the weak storyline.

The movie has a good message about the evils of the recording industry, but unfortuately, you have to sit through alot of dull scenes.People are gonna say I'm crazy, but I like the song "Joy,Joy,Joy" which is heard throughout the movie boxed It's a shmaltzy pop number performed by The Pages,a rival musical group, and it's supposed to be a horrible song but I can never get it out of my head, lol.

Well, the thing I appreciated is that they show how a producer can take a bland, crappy song like "Joy" (or "World of Today", or whatever it's called) and arrange the hell out of it. They show him going through the process of changing the arrangement, adding horns, strings, more experienced vocalists, etc. trying to shape it into a whole new piece, something that actually sounds much better, lol!...btw, the guy playing Harvey Keitel's engineer in the studio is none other than Charles Stepney, EWF's real producer and the man responsible for the arrangements....
