I saw "Dreamgirls" a few nights ago...

... for the first time. It was a rental.

The soundtrack and performances were an absolute blast. Jennifer Hudson, in particular, is a phenomenal vocalist and had been truly robbed on American Idol. I wish her continuing success. clapping What a voice...

Eddie Murphy and Beyonce really surprised me. The couple of songs I'd heard from Eddie's (laughable) singing career didn't give me much of an idea of his vocal talents, but he pretty much killed that shit as the Little Richard-esque Jimmy Early. cool Beyonce was great, too. For playing a character who wasn't supposed to be that strong a singer, her performance of "Listen" and various other singing moments of hers thoroughly impressed me. Her voice usually annoys the hell outta me, but here, I thought it was fairly stellar. biggrin She looked great, too.

My only complaint about the film is that I don't think the characters and overall story were as fleshed-out as they could have been, but hey, this is a movie based off of a musical, so of course the deeper aspects of the film were going to take a tiny bit of a backseat to the more technical ones.

Still, great stuff. I wouldn't mind owning this one. There really have been a few great musical movies in the past couple years, including "Ray" and "Walk The Line."

Well, I actually like Eddie's singing. "Put Your Mouth On Me" is the jam lol

I really liked this movie. It wasn't great, but I did enjoy it. Jennifer was fantastic and Beyonce, Eddie and Jamie were very good too, but I can see why it didn't win best picture and why Eddie didn't win as supporting actor. He was good, but the guy from Blood Diamond (djimon hounsou) should have won that award IMHO.

When Jennifer sang And I'm telling you... it brought tears to my eyes and even my husband was touched by her performance.

I thought the first half of the film was excellent. The second half dragged and I kept looking at my watch in the theater. The soundtrack is awesome. I was listening to it this weekend.

I thought Jennifer Hudson's vocal performance was phenomenol, but as an actress she was just okay. Certainly not Academy Award-worthy.

Agreed, but I thought vocally she was great IN the film, but the Oscars performance just proved to me t least that she and Anika Noni Rose are just shouty powerhouses with no control over their voices. Mixing in the studio did a hell of a lot for them.

Overall the Supporting Actress Oscar category was quite weak this year anyway. I liked Adriana Baraaza (sp?), but Rinko Kikuchi (another sp?) was rubbish. Cate Blanchett was miles and miles ahead of everyone put together, but 1) she already has an Oscar, and 2) she was nominated in a Supporting category with what was quite blatantly a lead role.

the movie was good, but compared to all the hype it got, it was overrated.

the movie was just okay to me
I was actually bored towards the end

I love that song "move move
move right outta my liiiiife"

that starts the movie out

everybody did a great job
just not my kind of flick
with musicals, I either love them or hate them
Grease I loved, Little Shop Of Horrors I loved
Dreamgirls... I didn't exactly HATE it...
but I didn't love it
