yeah I totally hate the hip hop they listen to. I'll enjoy a few songs here and there time to time, but find myself asking who this is by and who that's by and sometimes I'll be a snob about it and say music was so much better 10 & 20 years ago.

au contraire

I like to get my "snap"/"jig" on
every now & then... usually when
I'm intoxicated, or preparing to go clubbing

I'm very open minded when it comes to music
I surprise myself sometimes with the fact
that I find myself singing along to some of the BS
that's out there
(i.e. "Buy U A Drank", "Do The Heisman On That H*"
"T-Bag That H*", "Party Like A Rock Star"...)
if it makes my speakers bleed
usually I can groove to it cool

"Honey" was their best, IMO.

True - you should see my reaction when I hear J-Ho, Beyonce, Mariah or the sh!t that passes for hip-hop these days.

yeah I can't stand ashanti but found myself singing and moving to her stuff at a club one time, and I wasn't drunk either

you know what pisses me off though? If people I know born between 79 and 81 (i'm an 83 baby) are into today's mess, I don't feel like I should respect them for some reason. I mean, I'm a few years younger, was exposed to music from a very early age, so it's hard for me to imagine them being exposed to that stuff then and not appreciate it today or not be aware of samples that are overused.

that's another thing
I think I have to be Ashanti's #1 fan LOL
and we all know what that is
without having to go into detail

I can appreciate albums/thoughts
for what they are...
Concrete Rose is her best album to me
I think I play that first album the most though

I could go on & on about Ashanti
some folks @ MJB's messageboard
(BTW, they hate Ashanti over there
with the exception of like 2 or 3 other folks LOL)
they ask me "Chris... how on earth
can you dig the Chakas and the Arethas...
and also dig Ashanti, Amerie.. etc?"

I don't know, I just do
ain't nothing to it
I like what I like

I mean I DEFINITELY know that
Ashanti couldn't ever in her wildest dreams
hold a candle to Chaka...
but it's not many who can

BTW, I was born in '81 cool

I kinda feel you cause I like beyonce & rihanna, and a little bit of akon, diddy and timbaland too, but I don't act like that's the only music that exists the way people my age do. I mostly listen to 80's & 90's music, and stuff from the jacksons, madonna & prince and occasionally the newer stuff. I like a little of everything, but for some reason, people have a hard time admitting to liking anything else.

The other day, a friend told me he had never heard of the Cure. eek

I played him one song and his comment was, "It sounds sad." sad

Exactly. confuse

Another funny story: This same person told me how he had a nervous breakdown when he was 17 years old and that his parents and doctor put him in the psych ward for a few months and drugged him up at the time.

So I played Institutionalized for him, because I thought it so apt. I was like, "So does it bring back memories?"

He was like, "No." neutral

Same here - I like music that's dark, loud, angry & depressing(AIC, Soundgarden, Sevendust, Godsmack, Disturbed, along with classic R&B, Funk and old skool rap). I put on "Them Bones" and they're like, "You're not white, why are you listening to this sh!t for?"

Personally...I'm over that.

my friend got mad, cause i introduced him to "my bloody valentine" he said..this fucking sounds like whale music on lsd..i love my bloody valentine since that time...

my ultra religious friend on the other hand, almost had a heartattack cause i played both Christian death's "only a theatre of pain" and cocteau twins "garlands" back to back at work..

I played My Bloody Valentine for a co-worker once and she asked me if the tape was warped. confused

I sent Christian Death's Catastrophe Ballet cassette to a friend from college and she said she totally didn't know what to make of it. I think it's a very accessible album that almost anyone can appreciate. Not like Only Theatre Of Pain where Rozz is calling out for Satan. lol

The race comments on taste of music is disgusting, what the fuck is this 1950? Damn. barf

I've learned that I can't introduce people to my musical tastes, they just don't get it. My obsession with funk is only shared with the amazing people here, I'm over classic rock, blues is pretty universal and my jazz tastes just go over people's heads (except for here of course). Music is so much a part of my life that I really don't care what anyone thinks about my taste in music. Although, I'm always open to hearing something new, something different or unique because that never ends, thank god.

Yeah. I don't know anybody apart from my cousins who are famous music producers that I can have a serious conversation with about any of the music I like.

It pisses me off, so I don't have a lot of friends any more. I wanna meet some folks that I can have a conversation with about Prince, and Joni, and Nine Inch Nails, and Cameo, and Zapp, and Nirvana, and RATM, and Jaco...

It sucks. This one girl that my former housemate used to date was cool like that, real knowledgeable like me. Then they broke up, and my housemate moved out. Ain't even seen him since, let alone her.

I've become such a fucking loner recently. sad

I don't see anyone.

Whats funnier is, the white folks in my workplace consider Funk music, "jungle music" so you see, its a no-win situation after all disbelief lol

I used to hear that from rednecks all the time when I was growing up. Very few white people listened to funk and nowadays there are tons of white people that listen to rap and shit hop. That's why I love to compare shit hop to other slow shit and stereotypical "whitest of the white" music such as Lawrence Welk.....simply to piss the shit hop lovers off because funk was far from a Lawrence Welk tempo. lol

I think your musical tastes become more diverse as you mature. At school my record collection, not that I had much of a record collection, was limited to R&B and Lovers Rock. I dare not confess to liking peeps like the Carpenters and Abba it would have been seen as very "Uncool". However today my record collection consists of The Carpenters, as well as old skool R&B, Jazz and more less well known artists like Terry Callier. I don't even mind a little rap and Hip Hop in very small quantities.
