Rick James on the cover of Wax Poetic!

This magazine seems to be on a roll. Last month it was Betty Davis and this month Rick James is featured. There's also an article on the Latin Quarters club that rocked in NY during the late 80's. I guess all the old skool hip hoppers used to perform there. I never even heard of this magazine until last month but I am getting into it.

One last thing, i'm a huge Rick James fan but haven't picked up the new cd yet. Is it any good? I heard samples but wsn't impressed... sad

From what I've heard, it's just boring contemporary sounding generic r&b/hip hop shit.
It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

yeah, wonderful is pretty wacked. it sucks when you don't love an album by your favorite artist. it's really frustrating.

That's exactly what it is and the word "generic" is an excellent description of the entire album. Turn on the radio and listen to a station that plays current R&B. Every track on the album would fit in perfectly with it.

Possibly. However i'd say go for the subscription.
No celebrity pop-star fluff, no gossipy b.s., just interesting and unique articles about music.

I will offer another opinion. I would argue that about half of "Urban Rhapsody" was excellent and not just some shit dude put out just to try to get back in the game. "Mama's Eyes" was as good a ballad as Rick ever threw down. Considering it was 1997 and that with the exception of the good hip-hop years the funk proper had been, to put it kindly, dormant for many years, it was a very solid effort. It isn't consistent, but if you are really into Rick you need to peep it. If for no other reason than "Mama's Eyes". Do you know how many albums/tapes/CDs I bought over the years on the strength of ONE song on it I actually liked?? Many. Very many. And I don't regret most of those purchases.

Now, onward to your dismissal of "Wonderful". Two GREAT tracks on that record - the title track and "Loosey's Rap". That shit was vintage Rick. No, the whole album was not consistent and not enjoyable in its totality. That is true. So fucking what? It did not SUCK. It might not have been one of his better albums - that does not mean it "sucks". It was Rick completely coked out of his mind and on autopilot and phoning it in and yet I will put "Wonderful" up against WHOEVER gets nominated for best Male R&B Vocal or whatever come the next Grammy Awards and without even knowing what the nominated albums will be, "Wonderful" would beat them hands down. Just a little perspective.

i think one day i will get around to getting urban rhapsody. as for wonderful, i may have to give that another spin tonight. sometimes things take a while to grow on me but from what i remember i wasn't too impressed but you're right about loosey's rap. that's a cool track. "pimp the simp" is not on that album but i love that track. plus it has melle mel on it!

PIMP the SIMP was on Coldblooded. Now if ever an album deserved its own thread it's Cold Blooded. Rick's other undeniable 5-star masterpiece LP.

That album is from '81 where his name is written in a font similar to the one the mag uses - y'all need to stop sometimes, everything ain't always about P hammer

It's not as bad as I thought it would be lol I mean,it's no masterpiece but I like it.The title track is nice, and I also like "Taste" and "Funk Wit Me".The thing is,it's mostly a mellow affair. There's not alot of uptempo funk here and some of the tunes are even jazzy. It'll never be one of my favorite Rick James albums but I'm happy to have it.
