decent for quite a bit of alternative music, but i'll agree it was god-awful for top 40 pop. maybe even worse than now...and that's saying something!

We must've had vastly different experiences. Of course, you were graduating from high school and I was in junior high. I loved the late 80's.

i wasn't crazy about much mainstream music in the '80s at all, even from when i was in grade school or junior high, though i WILL admit to michaelmania when i was in junior high school, and of course olivia. i liked a bit of the new wave/gender bender stuff, of course - eurythmics, culture club, cyndi lauper, etc. it wasn't until the early/mid '90s when mainstream caught up with alternative for a bit that i enjoyed what was in the top 40, and we all know how long THAT lasted.

i like LOTS of cheesy top 40 stuff from the 70s. shrug

What I hate most about the late 80s is that annoying,programmed,over-synthesized sound that you hear on so many of those songs barf y'all know the songs I'm talking about (Billy Ocean's "Get Outta My Dreams,Get Into My Car",which went to Number One in 1988,is a prime example). These days, that music sounds horribly dated.

Bingo. Don't know if they did that Billy Ocean song but that fucking Stock Aitken Waterman production was horrible.

87-89 had U2 Joshua Tree, George Michaels Faith, INXS Kick, MJ Bad, Def Leppard Hysteria (my guilty pleasure headbang ), The Cult were pretty big, Guns N Roses Appetite, sure there was loads of rubbish but it's not so bad a time in music

OK, I just wanted to mention a few songs from this period, some of which I liked at the time (I was starting in elementary school at the time though lol ) and also some tracks I've discovered since.

Loved this video when I was seven biggrin : Queen - Invisible Man

Michael Jackson - Liberian Girl

Roachford - Cuddly Toy

Salt N' Pepa - Push It

OK, this one is not really "late" 80s but I believe it belongs to the second half of the decade, anyway it's a great song: Prefab Sprout - Johnny Johnny

And here's one just for fun biggrin : Mötley Crüe - Girls, Girls, Girls

I prefer Cameo's 70s and early 80s material to their later output. I think Word Up! is highly overrated. They had 100x times better albums in the 70s.
Zapp's first three albums were released in 1980, 1982 and 1983. Not exactly the late eighties wink

Prince is the one exception, pretty much the only artist whose late eighties and nineties output I dig. He has a special place in my heart biggrin

They had some decent stuff but it was weak compared to their early 80s stuff.

You lived by "The Funk Only Rule". I had to put you on the spot.

That's why I have the highest respect for Funkenstein. I think he's only around age 19 and for someone that young to love funk that much and refuse to lower their standards to anything else, they get my full respect.

I had to think long and hard to list those. There are more but I would have to really do some thinking. Funk was becoming scarce in those days. A certain little miss goodie two shoes Barbi doll (black Paris Hilton) had made her mark and was influencing people in those days. lol

I think there was some excellent music released in the late '80s. '87 in particular, was a great year...

U2 - Joshua Tree
George Michael - Faith
Prince - Sign 'o' the Times
Sting - Nothing Like the Sun
REM - Document
Eurythmics - Savage
The Cure - Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me
Bruce Springsteen - Tunnel of Love
Depeche Mode - Music For the Masses
Fleetwood Mac - Tango in the Night
Guns n Roses - Appetite for Destruction
INXS - Kick
Pet Shop Boys - Actually
The Smiths - Strangeways Here We Come

and I'll even admit to loving the first three songs on the Who's That Girl soundtrack...

...all from 1987

U2 - Rattle and Hum
REM - Green
Madonna - Like a Prayer
Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation 1814
B-52's - Cosmic Thing
Pet Shop Boys - Introspective
Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking
The Cure - Disintegration
New Order - Technique
Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine (even though it's dated horribly)
