Top 11 Jheri curl videos

1.Jheri-Curl Era: Michael Jackson

'Beat It' (1983)
No one can beat the king of pop when it comes to a clean top. Jackson set trends (and fires) with his curls in the early '80s.

2.Jheri-Curl Era: Lionel Richie

'Running With The Night' (1983)
In between activator touch-ups on set, Richie made sure to keep his dance moves as smooth as his curls

3.Jheri-Curl Era: Prince

'When Doves Cry' (1984)
Prince’s curl was as dramatic as he was, and it didn't happen overnight. His secret? Steamy baths and motorcycle rides.

4.Jheri-Curl Era: Rockwell

'Somebody's Watching Me' (1984)
Were ghouls and goblins haunting Rockwell for fun or were they really just after his activator?

5.Jheri-Curl Era: Sheila E.

'The Glamorous Life' (1984)
Sheila E. missed the Jheri-Curl bandwagon, but her back-up band certainly didn't. What's a 'Glamorous' life without the right hair?

6.Jheri-Curl Era: DeBarge

'Rhythm of the Night' (1985)
El DeBarge's Jheri-Curl is impressive in its scope and scale. Kind of the love child of Prince's and Michael Jackson's curl.

7.Jheri-Curl Era: Kool & the Gang

'Fresh' (1985)
Forget battle of the bands, make way for battle of the curls. This Jersey City R&B band rocked every Jheri-Curl style in 'Fresh.'

8.Jheri-Curl Era: Lisa Lisa

'Can You Feel The Beat' (1985)
Lisa Lisa's partners in crime, Full Force, rocked their curls with the magnum force they are known for.

9.Jheri-Curl Era: Kurtis Blow

'Back By Popular Demand' (1988)
Kurtis Blow's Jheri-Curl had a new look every week. This vid flaunts his pimped-out version.

10.Jheri-Curl Era: Deee-Lite

'Groove Is In the Heart' (1990)
Even though the '80s were officially over, Bootsy Collins kept the curl alive for Deee-Lite's 1990 video, 'Grove Is In the Heart.'

11.Jheri-Curl Era: DJ Quik

'Quik Is the Name'
(1991)
DJ Quik kept the Jheri- Curl alive on the West Coast well into the '90s. Maybe this wasn't such a good thing, but hey, it was his thing.

Ready for the World should be at the top of the list. Maybe follwed by The Deele and the Gap Band (especially the Early In The Morning Video). Besides, Lisa Lisa and DeBarge don't count. They didn't wear curls.

There's all kind of wrong on that list.

Prince, Lisa Lisa, Sheila E. and DeBarge did not wear Jheri Curls.

We need to define ourselves here:

Jheri Curl

The products of the Jherl Curl include chemicals of a beige, white & green or black bottle (That's a throwback right there) lol . Included with this would be the solution in the jar as well as the prcoess Jherl Curl Cap. Can often be done in the privacy of one's home.

&

Press & Curl

This would involve a curling iron (with stove or plug in version), a can of TCB, Dudleys oil sheen or whatever favorite 80's ethinic moistrizing product. This can also be done with curlers, however the process may slow down the up & coming 80's icon.

For Example:

Ready For The World
- Jherl Curl

Prince
- Press & Curl

Again:

Stoney Jackson
- Jherl Curl

Members of DeBarge
- Press & Curl*

*Notation* Press & Curl also known in the 80's as "Good Hair" lol

Finally:

Cooley - Dancer from Solid Gold
- Jherl Curl

Lisa Lisa
- Press & Curl

Actually, a "press & curl" is when someone actually gets their hair pressed (with a hot comb people) & then curled. & the so called "good hair" folks don't get their hair pressed. As I type this I realize how silly this all is lol but Lisa Lisa & the DeBarges had some styling done to their shit, no press just curls. Prince's ass had a perm & curled that shit w/ a curling iron. So many processes w/ the hair of folk... bananadance

Way funny guys lol Lionel ritchie gets my vote though, have you seen his later videos, Dancing on the ceiling, Say you say me, and the melodramatic love will conquer all where Ritchie drives from San Fran to LA to meet up with some woman who looks like a mix of Whitney Houston and Clare Huxtable!!! Funny or not they were great songs. biggrin

I don't Prince had Jheri though, his hair was more wavy then Jheried, Brown Mark and Andre had them though.

Oh why I am at it, as far as Ready for the World goes, you have to agree with Alex Hahn "The groups musical performance and melody (Both of which were marginal) was the synth heavy music, makeup and costumery and pouting of Melvin Riley Jnr was openly purloined from Prince".
Didn't the Deele have a crazy looking Prince imitator with a fucked up Jheri curl, adn then don't forget Living Colour.
