The only reason why people say she cant sing, is because she's black.

Tell me how many white artists who can sing like Rihanna ? (I don't even say sing better ?)

If she was white, people would say how great singer she is.

The judgement when it comes to black female singers goes to the extrem, you have to sing just like Patti Labelle or you cant sing.

What about the Fergies, the Gwnen Stefanis, the Nelly furtados etc ? They don't even come close but nobody care, they are white.

She definitely CAN sing, but needs practice to improve her skills.

But saying she cant sing is plain WRONG
[Edited 6/14/07 10:55am]

Dude, relax. Madge, Britney, Joss and the lot get roasted for their vocals as well on here.

And what happens to Rhianna is what happens to Beyonce.

Now some people want to argue that Beyonce is not that great singer, but if she was white ?

People go to the extrem, from she's an amazing singer to she can't sing at all.

Sing like Pati Labelle or you can't sing at all.

You are exactly what I was portraying, if you are a female black singer you have to sing like Pati Labelle or you CANT sing.

Rhianna is FAR better than Janet or Madonna. There's no compairison.

If she CANT sing, you have to consider that 90% of the mainstream white singers CANT sing too.

Not just Madonna, BUT 90% OF THE WHITE SINGERS CANT SING.

You have to be logical in your arguments. Being so extrem to judge black artists makes no sense.

What I'm trying to say to you is that race has absolutely nothing to do with this. Have you ever heard Rhianna live? She is no better than Janet or Madonna or Fergie or Gwen Stefani or Nelly Feturdo or Britney Spears.

I know that Christina can sing the skin off her big forehead though.

P.S. Erykah Badu can't sing like Patti LaBelle, but she can sing her ass off.
[Edited 6/14/07 11:43am]

It has to do with race.

But if you think Rhianna is no better than Madonna. Good for you. It only confims everthing I think...

I sorta get some of what you're saying. A double standard does exist as it relates to white and black singers...but Rihanna is definitely not a good example of that.

Krayzie, I'm just curious--If you think Patti is the standard for Black female vocalists then who is the standard for White female vocalists?

I've never said Patti is the standard of Black female vocalists and she's not even my fav female singer.

But seems to me that there's a double standard when it comes to black and white singers.

People judge artist by race not talent.

That's why you'll see people saying Rhianna cant sing and praising Robin Thicke...

I think the standards are set according to musical genres, but race is a factor in that as well.

No, I took Patti Labelle as an example.

I think the standards are set according to musical genres, but race is a factor in that as well.

It's about race not genres. If it had to do with genres, people would say she cant sing rnb music/soul music, or she's not a great rnb singer. But this thread is 'Rihanna can't sing'. Without even mentionning any genres.

I've heard robin live and he sounded good. Rhianna, however...

Maybe because he's white.

But if he was black, you'd probably think he can't sing...

Youre as right as rain. Further, Robin Thick is more of the same swagger jacking story of American music. America is so racist Alan Thick's son is a bigger star than the millions of Black men who created the style hes imitating.

Krayzie,

I disagree with it not being about genre or race. Rather, I think it comes down to just plain old talent. Unlike Robin,Rihanna is more of a "factory" made singer so you are not going to hear her sing anything that is out of her comfort zone. Robin on the other hand is also a writer and he was a writer before he became a singer. So, he is more capable of singing anything that is outside of his zone. I get the impression from reading these posts, that white people are incapable of singing R&B. Well, what about people like Hall & Oats or the Average White Band. They have been singing R&B music in it's truest form, for years. So, what gives?

Wait a minute, the thread is 'Rihanna can't sing' not, Rihanna is a "factory" made singer.

Funny how you find excuses for Robin "white" Thicke since I found a terrible performance of him that shows how poor singer he is on stage.

Oh but Robin on the other hand is also a writer.
Oh but Robin he was a writer before he became a singer.

So that's OK he's white. So we can accept his poor performances. I don't think those excuses would work if he was black.

Robin Thicke is supposed to be a real SOUL singer ? And he's not even able to perform properly his own stuff on stage.

On the other hand Rhianna who is not supposed to be a soul singer in the first place is straight sentenced SHE CANT SING.

Rhianna is a POP/RnB singer just like the Gwen Stefani, the Nelly Furtado, the Fergie. AND SHE OUTSHINES ALL THOSE GIRLS VOCALLY.

But I've never seen thread about Nelly Furtado cant sing, Fergie cant sing', Fergie cant sing etc. There are so many white singers who can even come close to Rhiana. It's not even funny.

You only prove that there's a double standard and you're not even able to see that.

probably has been said, but i ain't readin' all that sh*#, the industry doesn't CARE if u can't. as long as they can market u. hasn't stopped a whole lotta artists. esp. Madonna, Janet. huge upside in the Latin/Brazilian world for Rihanna, throw a rapper on a lead "urban single" and u have pop/urban markets locked. can't sing, but i bet she can laugh..... all the way to the bank.
