Cheryl Lynn's 'In The Night' (1981) and 'Instant Love' (1982) albums released as a 2-CD set This came out over a year ago,but I finally picked it up this weekend
Two of Cheryl Lynn's early 80s albums have been released as a 2-CD set.'In The Night' was originally released in the summer of '81 and features the uptempo jam "Shake It Up Tonight",a major hit on R&B radio that summer. It also did well in the clubs. This album was produced by Ray Parker Jr.,who was at the peak of his powers back then. His unmistakable sound is all over this record. 'Instant Love' followed a year later. It was produced by Luther Vandross.I could be wrong, but I think this was the first album that he produced for another artist.Aretha Franklin's 'Jump To It' album (also produced by Luther) came out around the same time,so who knows? What's cool about this album is,like 'Jump To It',it features the "early Vandross sound" that we heard on his own 'Never Too Much' album.Alot of funky, breezy grooves throughout. The title track was the first single.....a cool, slinky midtempo groove that is light and airy. But this album is known more for "If This World Were Mine",the old Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell classic.Lynn and Vandross' version became a Quiet Storm/slow jam classic. Listening to these albums make me miss the days when artists were paired with one producer or production team It created a consistent, flowing collection of songs (think Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones....Barbra Streisand and Barry Gibb....Diana Ross and the Chic duo). These days, artists like Beyonce and Mariah Carey have ten different producers on their albums.Back in the day, artists didn't need that...a single, skilled producer could handle the job themselves One year,Cheryl works with producer Ray Parker Jr....the next year, she works with producer Luther Vandross, resulting in a couple of albums that are consistent and cohesive. There was a time when inspired collaborations happened all the time in pop music. It was the norm back then. I go crazy when they compile 2 old school albums in a set like this and then sell it for the price of one CD.I paid only $12.99 for this!

I know you like you like the fact that the CDs are in the set together, but not compiled on one disc. How come you don't like when two albums are on the same disc?

I have 2 cd players on my system, along with a mixer.. I like fading out & going to the next groove, instead of pushing the skip buttons... One can't compliment the other that way Especially when you're recording it just isn't right [Edited 6/12/07 2:01am] [Edited 6/12/07 2:39am]

Plus,
An album is worthy of a cd of its own

I hope they do something like for her first two albums, the debut (1978) and the follow-up album 'In Love' (1979). speaking of Cheryl Lynn, her 'Best Of' CD,released in 1996,is lousy they left off so many songs! They didn't even include the 12" version of "Got to Be Real" and they also didn't use the 12" version of "Encore".Plus, they didn't include the singles "Instant Love" and "In The Night".Instead, they padded out the CD with a bunch of less-than-brilliant album tracks.Cheryl deserves better than that.

I recently bought this cd too, and i love it....
But i prefer her album "Cheryl Lynn" (her debut i think), if only for "Come in from the rain" Diana Ross recorded that song too, it`s nothing compared to Lynn`s version
