I don't know anything about her beyond what I saw last night.
What struck me were a few striking similarities in (read carefully) presentation to Amy Winehouse. (sort of 60s retro vibe, band dressed in suits, etc.) A much classier woman (not hard to do) however. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. I remember when Jay-Z's cd was released; I heard "Lost Ones" and was wondering who was on vocals and it was Chrisette Michele..... way before i heard Amy Winehouse's new CD. I told y'all about Chrisette. I even brought her up in an org debate about which trainwrecks like Amy get so much love and women like Chrisette Michelle and Lina who have similar styles get no love at all. Her CD drops pretty soon. Check the clips:
http://www.defjam.com/sit.../index.php As for the performance, I could tell she was nervous but she did pretty well. This is basically her first shot as a solo artist. Before this, she was just known for singing hooks on peoples' tracks. The CD is SOLID! Seriously, this is gonna be one for the collection. The tracks and the vocals are strong. Chrisette Michele performed today on the local KTLA Morning News show.
She sang live while accompanying herself on a Yamaha S80 electronic keyboard. No band, background singers/dancers or hype-persons. The song was Love Is You from the... ...I Am album. Didn't particularly like the song but she sang & sold it with a very classy & stylish presentation. Pray that her "people/handlers" don't stifle her talent by putting a hippity-hop albatross around her neck. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. She was on Letterman?
Boy have times changed. Back in the day Letterman never had acts like this. I always had to wait for Arsenio. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

Wow, she's got a great voice and she's beautiful.
I bet in 5 years, she'll be making music and Ms Winehouse will be a "remember that one chick with the big head and the tattoos"

It's funny that you said this, because I just started another thread asking why there was so much hype around Amy Winehouse. I dig her stuff and her voice, but I just don't know that it warrants the hype that it receives. There have been several artists in the past 10 years that have been just as good if not better. I wondered about the race thing, but then I thought about Esthero who is white as well, but hasn't received the same type of exposure. Maybe the British thing makes Amy more exotic to US audiences. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

Exactly...Amy winehouse's sound is not original..although I like some of her tracks,.....her sound pulls from the Motown sound. You can hear Smokey and Diana all through her music, borrowed sound is what I call it. Fantastic Artists like Goapele, Alice Smith, Skye, Lina don't get the promotion or attention from the music industry that they deserve. [Edited 6/28/07 12:02pm]

If the Back To Black album was released with Chrisette's vocals instead of Amy's, I'd still be all over it.
