Her voice is fresh and unique and evokes memories of Minnie Ripperton. An urban chanteuse by birth, the bi-coastal Amel Larrieux grew up in a West Village "artists building" in New York, her parents exposing her early to bohemian characters and experiences that would mold her eclectic sensibilities. Her forename which Amel means "hope" in Arabic, is indicative of the many influences her music drawn from: R&B, soul, jazz, hip-hop, and gospel with flashes of Middle Eastern, West African, and Indian ethnic styles. She has often been documented for describing her music as "Amel's music". Larrieux started her music career as half of the R&B duo Groove Theory along with Bryce Wilson and eventually launched her solo career. Now with 3 successful solo CD’s, and movie soundtracks to her credit, she debuts at Yoshi’s in support of her new CD on Bliss Life Lovely Standards. Lovely Standards is Amel’s first foray into the world of classic American standards which features Larrieux’s take on classics from Duke Ellington to Rodgers & Hammerstein. The handpicked collection of songs and their nuanced delivery once again exhibit her versatility and devotion to her craft while defying stereotypes.

Amel's solo debut was great, nicely paced. Since then, her releases have been increasingly boring; after one listen of Morning, I was done. I don't know why. But she does have a distinctive voice.
