Sunday night I went to Church...

...and got saved.

I was baptized & born again in the spirit of true Soul/R&B by "The Reverend" himself...

...Al Green .

A Florida friend of mine had the FOH (front of house) mixing gig at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills and asked me if I wanted to see the show...

....So here was my general vantage point.

This was a real non-stop Soul Show with a full-blown 10 piece tight-ass band...

...Bass, drums, 2 guitarists, 2 keyboard players, 3-pc horn section & percussion.

Also add 2 background vocalists (one of which was his daughter).

Oh yeah...

...add 2 dancers

The set went like this...

I Can't Stop
Let's Get Married
Everything's Gonna Be Alright
Amazing Grace
/Nearer My God To Thee
Let's Stay Together

...How Can You Mend A Broken Heart

He went into a monologue that i'll paraphrase...

People ask me, "Why are your songs so long?"
I tell 'em cause they got so much Good Stuff in 'em.

He then went on to explain what the "Good Stuff" was and where it came from by doing a brief medley consisting of the following songs.

Can't Help Myself
My Girl
I've Been Loving You Too Long
Wonderful World

Tired of Being Alone. Toward the end of this tune...

...he asked the audience a question.

Still In Love With You

And the closer...

...Love and Happiness

Let me tell you something. You know those stratospheric notes in many of his tunes?
This man at 60+ hit every last one of them. Didn't miss a one.
No backing tracks. No vocal aids. No fakery or trickery. He just did it Old-School.

pray All praises to The Rev...rose

Special note to paligap: blackeye I spun around and hit Rick Rubin in the eye with my elbow...wink

The 1st pic was the best one, IMO.

BTW, Al Green is forever old-school. Even when recording a new album, he still use THE SAME microphone that he been using since the 70's.

The one I didn't take. smile

For the last 2 he was back with the partner (and many of the musicians) that helped to create those classic records on the Hi label...

I finally listened to my Best of Al Green set last week for the first time and I loved it. I have new found respect and admiration for the Rev. He made some timeless classics that sound just as fresh as they did 30+ years ago. Al Green Rocks and he's got himself a new fan!
