Old R&B Heads - Remember Ren Woods?

Ren Woods 'Azz Izz' (May 1982)

A much sought-after album amongst Prince ...

© 1982 Elektra Records

I'm not fimiliar with the song that Prince wrote for her(although I wish I could hear it pray and I'd def appreciate it if anybody could orgnote it for me - if they have it).

Didn't know that she was a singer untill I heard this song titled "Burning My Heart Out" from this movie...

She had the Phylicia Rashad package(Good voice, good acting, tough Broadway background and good looks) fact is, she was TOO DAMN GOOD to find work in Hollywood.

I'm personally trying to find her music everywhere but its all in vain, it seems that she and everything associated with her(minus the movies) have completely vanished.

My bad. allmusic had their wires crossed regarding the album link.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
A talented teenage group that formed in Los Angeles, CA, the members were Ilene Anderson, Mary Lou Anderson, and the incredible Renee "Ren" Woods. The sky was the limit for this promising group which began as the Soul Five, inspired by the Jackson 5. Two members dropped and the remaining members switched to Sunday's Child. Sammy Davis Jr. took them under his wing and was partly responsible for securing them a deal with Reprise Records, where they recorded their only album, Sunday's Child in 1970.

Reprise Records let this fantastic album by three Southern California teenagers -- 16-year-old Ilene Anderson, 14-year-old Mary Lou Anderson, and 13-year-old Renee "Ren" Woods -- gather dust in warehouses. The teens give every selection a rich gospel flavor, excelling on a medley comprised of "I Found a Love," "Yes I'm Ready," "You're Good for Me," and "Wichita Lineman." They show reverence but no fear in tackling "My Song," popularized by Aretha Franklin, the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody," and Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed." This is an item that Reprise should reissue on CD pronto; as it is, if you can't find a copy at a garage sale or resale store, you're out of luck. Dynamo lead singer Ren Woods later recorded solo on many labels including Elektra and CBS/ARC, and she has enjoyed a long acting career in television and movies.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Ren Woods was in the movie "Car Wash"..(not the hooker-lol)...She played the role of one of the guys girlfriends. She wanted him to go back to school and he wouldn't.

My ass was snoozin, I finally got around to play that Ren Woods "Azz Izz" on the ol Victrola this afternoon, and I was pleasantly surprised. That album is great. Ya know I was kinda expecting all slow/midtempo like tracks, but she got one killer jam on there, my new favorite, "I Don't Wanna Stop." The song has a vibe kinda similar to Cameo's "Knights By Night" and it that.shit.was.jammin! My other favorite on there is the slow jam "Take Me To Heaven", But I enjoyed this whole album, all off one listen. She did her thang on all them tracks.

Its a shame that Prince wanted her to take the song off the album.

She still going hard I hear, I got this from IMDB:

Autobiographical one-woman concert appearances in "A Diva Like Me" and "An Empress Like Renn" have been favorably received.

I also remember her cameo in Whoopi Goldberg's Jumpin' Jack Flash.

Yeah, I was just checkin her out on IMDB myself, looks like she's featured in a movie schedueled to be released this year as well.

First time I ever seen her was in "Car Wash", second time was this movie called "Youngblood" with her and Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, who btw released a great album himself back in 1977 or 78.

According to the caption up there "The track was later removed at Prince's request - possibly because he didn't feel it was up to scratch.".
