All For You -- return to an upbeat outlook

no no no! Recording for "Rhythm Nation" began before "Like a Prayer" was released, so I don't think it's fair to suggest that she was ripping off Madonna at that point. I only see her following Madonna's footsteps with "janet." and "Design of a Decade." "The Velvet Rope" isn't quite like anything Madonna did. "All for You" indeed is a return to an upbeat outlook (to some degree), but "Music" carries a somber mood throughout much of the record.

Recording began for RN before LAP was released. you don't think it changed the tone of what she was doing part-way through?

Velvet Rope isn't all that different than what Madonna had done. lots of adult-contemporary r&b, which is what Bedtime Stories was. with a little bit of progressive stuff thrown in (Bedtime Story v. Empty or Sanctuary v. Anything).

Music -- 5 out of the 10 tracks carry an upbeat sound. Janet's also contains about the same ratio of happy v. sad songs. but the overall impression of the era is more care-free.

hell, the woman's (janet's) dancers were kicked out of rehearsals for Madonna's Drowned World tour because she didn't want them ripping her off.

I will admit that Janet has taken a few cues from Madonna, but how do you explain songs like "The Velvet Rope" and "Go Deep" as following Madonna's trends?

Go Deep = Don't Stop
Velvet Rope = Why's It So Hard

? I don't see the connection here at all. biggrin

Go Deep / Don't Stop ... totally mindless mid-tempo dance songs.

Velvet Rope / Why's It So Hard ... boo hoo, the world is hateful biggrin

"Control" was released in January 1986. "True Blue" was released in late June 1986.

here's another one:

1986 -- Madonna gets serious and changes her style.
1986 -- Janet gets serious and changes her style (thank god for this one!)

"Control" was released much before "True Blue." biggrin

you sure about that?

Actually,in this case, both albums came out around the same time.'True Blue' was released in June 1986 and I think 'Control' came out a few months sooner.

hey! you're supposed to be helping me here! biggrin

"Don't Stop" sucks major ass, but "Go Deep" grooves with a great funk. "The Velvet Rope" sonically sounds nothing like Madonna had done.

actually, the Velvet Rope sounds sonically a lot like Why's It So Hard. of course Madonna didn't hire that flash-in-the-pan japanese fiddle player to dress hers up, but... well. she didn't need to. she realized it was a filler track. but Janet based her whole album around the concept biggrin

We have a special need to feel that we are loved. Come with me inside my Velvet Rope.

Sexual overtone but a plea for universal love and acceptance. Both have a sad, yearning sound. Both are minor key.

No, there's nothing similar there.

Not even close! Their messages are different and using minor key as a comparison for the sound is really stretching it. rolleyes

Whatever. I'm not going to argue this any further. It's only making me angry. "The Velvet Rope" is much better than either "Erotica" or "Bedtime Stories." The title track doesn't sound anything like "Why's It So Hard" or anything she had released up to that point.

***Madonna is getting ready to release the theme song to the new James Bond film 'Die Another Day'.

***Janet has just announced that she is doing the theme song to the new movie 'Chicago'(based on the popular play).

***Madonna announced that her next CD will be out around March 2003.

***Janet has announced that she wants her next CD out in "early 2003".

Who's copying who? You decide.

Whatever. I'm not "just funnin'." I'm sick of people insinuating that Janet's career is a carbon-copy of Madonna's. Damn! She's got her own ideas too...Don't you think Madonna has taken a few cues from Janet's dancing? They both have their own merit.

Let's see, I don't really have any agenda or game plan for my new cd, so I think I'm gonna pattern my singles and videos after Madonna. Here goes.

Music vs. All 4 U- I'm gonna make a really colorful, sexual video about how extroverted I am and how much I love going out on the town with my girls. Look at how much fun I'm having! Uptempo, danceable song and title track.

Don't Tell Me vs. Someone To Call My Lover- I think I wanna get rural with this one and dance around in the dirt. Let's throw in an acoustic guitar sample for the hell of it. A fun song about wanting a relationship.

What It Feels Like For A Girl vs. Son of a Gun- Let's make this one a remix video and be really edgy in it. Let's have lots of black and go around threatening everyone with mindless violence. A song about how sucky it can be to be a woman.

I've done it. Yet another success due to the career by numbers school of Madonna.

GOD DAMN! YOU WIN! BEST POST EVER IN THE MADONNA/JANET DEBATE biggrin
