Funkadelic fans; what went wrong with the sound of 'free your ass'?

I love this album; it's a msterpiece apart from the sound.

Is it the mastering? i don't know becuase i don't have the original lp but it sound like all the mixing was pushed to the limit. Quite bothersome and headache inducing.

I know by the time cosmic slop was made george was making sure all the songs sounded great and were mixed well so nothing was unintentionally distorted but i think it was the acid plus the rushed making of the album which effected the recording of 'free'.

The master recording was intentionally distorted by a drug- crazed George Clinton. He didn't know was he was doing and gave the engineer fits podding the volume up and down and fading the balance left to right. It's mentioned in the ORAL HISTORY.

cheers i thought so. DAMN if only it was clearer and the voices weren't so loud and headache inducing; what an album.

It's a credit to the amazing music that the cd is still listenable. The production is some of the worst I've ever heard. I guess it's psychedelic, at least smile

He messed w/Maggot Brain, too, mixing out everything but the guitar. That turned out better sounding, productionwise, though

I agree w/ P Funk Jazz..Cheif George Cokehead was out of his mind when he did this LP. But it's still a classic right up there w/ "Axis" and "Sabbath Vol 4".
Eddie is in pure funk metal mode.

P..kinda off topic and probably better for another thread..but I've meant to ask your opinion on the Bill Laswell P-Funk "Black Arc" recordings from the early 90's. Did you dig any of them? (funkpill, Funkenstien, Meloh 9, Brutha B, Pali, Aud..anyone?..lol)

As "anyone", I'll post.
I have most of them I believe.
Zillatron-Lord of the Harvest. My fave and most listened to of the bunch.
Hardware (Bootsy, Buddy Miles, Steve Salas) - Had some good stuff. I need to listen again, it's been awhile.
Mutiny- Once again I need to listen with fresh ears. I remember thinking it was ok.
OG Funk (Billy Bass) - Had some good stuff and some bad stuff (dated rap). It's just cool to have a CD with Billy at the helm.
Slave System- Only listened to a few times and wasn't that impressed. Need another listen.
That's all of the "Black Arc" stuff I have.
As I said, Zillatron, I believe, is the best of the bunch.
Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

I got most of 'em. Admittedly all are not stellar, but they are absolutely critical to own if you want to get a "blakrawk" groove. Build another thread and we'll go into detail.
