Rare Groove Of The Week: Freedom - Dance And Sing Along

This week's Rare Groove comes from Freedom, a group outta Jackson, MS., signed to Malaco Records, also based in Jackson.

Many of yall may be familiar with Freedom through the sounds of their most well known track, "Get Up And Dance", the second single off their 1978 Malaco debut "Farther Than Imagination", and which also happens to be one of the most sampled records of all time; with examples such as "Freedom (Grandmaster Flash & Furious Five)", "You Must Learn (Boogie Down Productions)", & "Anytime (SWV)", among others.

This week's track is titled "Dance And Sing Along", the first single off their debut and released as a 12'' single by the Miami label, T.K. Records (T.K. Disco).

I've never heard that particular track from Freedom. The songs I have from Freedom are "Get Up and Dance" (which is a copy of the song a friend made for me), the "Changes In Time" album which features the jam "At the Party", and the 12 Inch "Whodat".

Freedom was a wonderful local group. I live in Jackson and Malaco Records is located here. The rediculous thing is, you can't even go to Malaco Records and get Freedom's old jams. The only place I've seen their stuff (besides a used record store) is an import CD that can be ordered online. It's really rediculous that something is available thousand miles away but you can't even purchase it in the city in which it was made.

Damn, this Freedom track I got here, I actually purchased out of a vinyl shop here in Miami about four years ago, and there were three more of this same single on the shelf. A lot of Malaco stuff released in the late 70s can be found where I'm at, but then again, Malaco was workin alongside TK Records for some of them releases, so it might have a lil somethin to do some with my location. shrug

I saw the Freedom 45 "At The Party" at a used record store. I had the local group Sho-Nuff's 45 "Don't Be Lonely" back in the day but a few years ago, I bought two of their albums..."Tonite" and "Stand Up For Love" in the used record store. There's another local group's album I saw in the store also...The Rose Brothers. You may have heard their slow jam "I Get Off On You" that made it nationally. My favorite is a funk track called "Wall to Wall Freaks". I've got to pick that one up if it's still there.
