in what context.... that they were extremely influential without having the massive success others would with the same or similar sound?

or just people, who in general pushed the boundaries, whether they had commercial success with it or not?

I'm not sure if these artists were that far ahead (more accurately right on time maybe) or if everyone else was just so far behind.

A few that come to mind...

...Louis Armstrong

...Sun Ra

...Ray Charles

...Miles Davis

...Jimi Hendrix

...Frank Zappa

Trend setters at the very least.
Artists you continue to hear about long after they've gone.

I'm talking in general terms; whether they're considered 'underdogs', highly influential with modest status or on the mainstream level.

Here are a few sites that will lay out his colorful background better than I ever could...

http://www.furious.com/pe...sunra.html
http://missioncreep.com/mw/sunra.html
http://www.allaboutjazz.c...p?id=10507
http://www.nathanielturne...nrabio.htm

One thing I will say is to be careful what you listen to first.
If you go far into his discography you won't have an understanding of what his musical background is.

A good place to start might be...

...Jazz in Silhouette

The tune Saturn in particular. It will give a good fix on what a great writer/arranger he was in a very traditional Big Band setting.
Some of the motifs and horn voicings you'll hear in Saturn will lead you to believe that Frank Zappa must have heard this material at some point.

Hope this helps Sis. wink

...on a whim during one of our weekend treks to Greenwich Village.
Don't know if our altered state had any bearing, but it made for a very trippy listening session.

In terms of electronic music, i'd throw Dick Hyman's...

...MOOG: The Electric Eclectics of Dick Hyman into the mix.

Favorite track: Evening Thoughts
Strangest track: Give It Up Turn It Loose

I think it still holds up pretty nicely as a headphones album - it's primitive sounding, but I can still get into it.

and if we're going to go down the electronics path, then Karlheinz Stockhausen
is gonna have to get name-checked as well. I only have a passing knowledge of his work, but he's definitely someone whose work has reverberated in a big way.

I only have a cheap-o compilation. It's certainly not the most profound music you're ever gonna hear, but they were definitely way ahead of the metal curve.

Or Genesis w/ Peter Gabriel.

Ska was out before they came along, but they were one of the firsts to fuse it with punk.....pretty cool. I love Terry Hall's voice too.

duh. lol

Arnold Schoenberg started atonality in actual compositions, so I'd say him too.
Some of his stuff pretty off the wall considering his era. A prof. in college hipped me to him.

No mentions of Parliament and JB yet?
