Anytime. in what context.... that they were extremely influential without having the massive success others would with the same or similar sound? or just people, who in general pushed the boundaries, whether they had commercial success with it or not? I'm not sure if these artists were that far ahead (more accurately right on time maybe) or if everyone else was just so far behind.
A few that come to mind... ...Louis Armstrong ...Sun Ra ...Ray Charles ...Miles Davis ...Jimi Hendrix ...Frank Zappa Trend setters at the very least. Artists you continue to hear about long after they've gone. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. I'm talking in general terms; whether they're considered 'underdogs', highly influential with modest status or on the mainstream level.

I think it still holds up pretty nicely as a headphones album - it's primitive sounding, but I can still get into it. and if we're going to go down the electronics path, then Karlheinz Stockhausen is gonna have to get name-checked as well. I only have a passing knowledge of his work, but he's definitely someone whose work has reverberated in a big way.

Or Genesis w/ Peter Gabriel. Ska was out before they came along, but they were one of the firsts to fuse it with punk.....pretty cool. I love Terry Hall's voice too. duh. Arnold Schoenberg started atonality in actual compositions, so I'd say him too. Some of his stuff pretty off the wall considering his era. A prof. in college hipped me to him. No mentions of Parliament and JB yet? looking for you in the woods tonight Switch FC SW-2874-2863-4789 (Rum&Coke)
