Yes, 'Mustapha' is wonderfully insane, and in its sort of Islamic vocal effects, almost the only time Freddie remotely acknowledged in any public way (however humorously), his Persian roots.

persian roots?

Whooooa slow down, charlie brown!

there might b some influence at times, but I really don't see the roots connection there.
neutral

I said he probably meant it humorously, and the link is tenuous, but worth mentioning imo.

Freddie was from an Indian Parsee background (another name for Persian Zoroastrians of Iran who settled in India), brought up on Zanzibar, an island in the Indian Ocean between Africa and India (a period of his life which I believe he was very reluctant to talk about in interviews), a place with major Arab/ Islamic influence in its history and culture, including music. While Freddie was from a priveliged English-influenced background of civil servants, he would have heard the sounds of the streets and from the mosques (the call to prayer of the muezzins of the mosque is what the intro to 'Mustapha' most resembles imo, even tho Freddie is singing semi-nonsense).

I'm not saying this is definitely where he got the influence for the 'Mustapha' ditty, but it would be less unexpected for someone of his background to concieve the idea than some provincial English musician.

I'm getting far too deep, and 'Mustapha' is really a silly little song, so I'll leave it at that smile .
