Faith Evans vs. Mary J. i know she used to write for Mary and did some background vocals too, but is it because they're vying for the same nice and have such similar styles that Faith doesn't get the props Mary does? she's has a nice assortment of "hits" too. i actually think Faith is a better singer but i know ppl talk about how they FEEL Mary. i thought about this when i heard a Faith Evans song at the gym today. any thoughts?

I used to own Faith's self-titled debut album. And vocally, she was way better than MJB.

I'm a bigger Mary fan, but Faith is a better singer. She should be where Mary is right now (In terms of success) but I think personal problems have gotten in the way. [Edited 6/9/07 0:36am] "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ

Well they've both had personel problems but Mary J gets the bigger of the marketing and push. Faith's music is starting to just get played on more soul/r&b station then MJB whos also o9n the hip-hop stations. PRINCE: Always and Forever

Mary by a mile, but Faith's cool too.

Faith gets boring to me real quick, but I like the quality of her voice. She's a more consistent singer than Mary, but Mary has more songs that I like... & way better stage presence

Co-sign I like Faith's debut a lot, but she hasn't done anything as good as My Life. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Vocally, there's no contest - Faith. Artistically speaking, her material bores me. She deserves a better shot than the one she was given. Mary's releases have always been good, and her audiences relate to her. Faith never found a cohesive audience.

Faith has a beautiful voice and I haven't heard her sound as bad as some of Mary's more unfortunate live performances but you'd be far more likely to find me at an MJ concert, or listening to an MJ CD. I love Mary's rawness, her honesty, her ability and willingness to put her pain and joy into her music. She's far more relatable. The Normal Whores Club

Both Faith and Mary J make excellent backup singers and are on the same level vocally. Both of them started out as backup singers in the buisness. Later in the years, Faith started writing the lyrics to her songs as well as some of Mary J's. Also , Mary J starting writing and becoming more involved with her albums as well.

they're both good, but faith is stuck in the shadow of being biggie's widow and deserves more recognition though I listen to mary much more.

mary seems to have achieved some "crossover" success with the Elton John and U2 collabs. when u start to get "middle america" checkin' for you, and some do so because they've HEARD about you (like "oh, this is that Mary J. chick, she's supposed to be good or something"). Faith meanwhile is still strictly r & b.
i saw her two year's ago at Detroit's tastefest for free and she was good. i was surprised at how many hits she actually has and she was grateful for all who were there (even though it was free). she said that she knows a Faith Evans fan is a real fan because she knows she's still "fringe" and her fans seek her out so she was really appreciative. i don't think being Biggie's widow is hindering her. she needs a crossover hit and a big (as in great) album with great promotion behind it. i think she's a singles artist primarily. 2 or 3 from a cd and that's it.

I thought love like this and I'll be missing you were her crossover hits when they came out, but they really weren't though they seemed huge among high school peers and friends, who were strictly into r&b/hip hop as I now realize, and from airplay on radio all the time.

Faith Evans, easily. Mary's pitching is erratic to say the least and I'm not a fan of her fake histrionics. Faith Evans has a far richer tone to her voice.

I like tamia, deborah cox, and chante'moore better than these two but i
actually like faith evans over mary j. Faith i think has a better voice and i think mary is overrated but has made some decent songs. Don't laugh at my funk

Mary J. Blige
I think Faye has better songs sometimes especially from this album: this album is the direction I wanted Mary to go in at that time but hey, I can't have my cake and eat it too because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

yeah, i think Faithfully is Faith's best reviewed and most solid album, and it was largely slept on. it should've gotten the same push as Mary's Mary

yeah it's a shame she didn't blow up during faithfully cause I really thought she was at her peak then. I remember when I love you from her third album was a single and was on BET, and my mom walked in the room and kept saying what an awesome song it was, what a shame it didn't get more publicity
and if you ask me, the mary album was her creative peak along with share my world, but I don't think teens were feeling the album, it was too mature for them, I was one of those but with time came to appreciate it as her best work.

Oh please, without question Faith Evans. IMO, Mary J is one of the most overrated vocalist in the industry (second is Beyonce). But Mary of course has recieved more props.....much like Beyonce. I am convinced Beyonce's career would not be where it is, if she had dark skin.

mary's voice has emotion to it though it's not the best techincally. Beyonce's is awesome technically though the emotion is not always there, I think it's hiding because of the type of music she's doing right now.

I respect everyone's opinions here
although in a perfect world I could say I love them both equally I definitely DO NOT I respect them individually for what they bring to the table BTW... this Xmas album: shits on most R&B albums of that year because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

I love both and I agree that Faith is the better singer. Mary already had a huge following but it was around 1999 and the MARY album where she made fans out of superstars like Bono and Elton John and she began to expand her fanbase into the mainstream and worked with artists not on the R&B/Hip Hop side...with Elton she also became a spokesperson in the fight for the AIDS cure and awareness...(along with Lil Kim)...with Oprah as a big fan and friend...Mary is just on a whole other social level than Faith is which is why most may prefer Mary because her exposure has been huge.
Faith has also expanded her horizons singing on Shooter Jenning's (Waylon's son) albums but not many know about that.... All in all...both are great..one's just embraced enormous fame is all. peace Every minute of last night is on my face today....
