R. Kelly! This is serious!

Can someone please explain to me how this man is considered a musical genius by many people? I just don't see/hear it! His songs are almost like jokes to me. "you remind me of my jeep"? Is he serious? and people think those are great lyrics? Is it a case of him saying he's a genius therefore everyone thinks he is? I'm trying to really understand this shit.

R. Kelly strikes a chord with most minority audiences. I tend to agree with you about some of his stuff, but he has written some GREAT songs IMO:

Home Alone
Your Body's Calling (Remix)
Bump and Grind (Remix)
Step in the name of love (Remix)
You Are Not Alone (for MJ)
At Your Best (Steppers Remix) (for Aaliyah)

If you overlook (or ignore) songs like "You Remind Me", "Half On A Baby", "Feeling On Your Booty", etc., you will find some great work. I think that his Chocolate Factory is an excellent piece of work.

I'm not sure if 'Genius' would be the right word IMHO. He is a very talented songwriter. But when I think of Genius I think of Prince, Steve Wonder, & Michael Jackson. Not sure if R. Kelly deserves 2 be in the same sentence as those guys.

I watched that Trapped In The Closet ... it was entertaining, but it really wasn't something I ever need to see/hear again.

R. Kelly would have one KILLER greatest hits package . . . but the truth is, his albums are 75% filler. He just puts out a lot of them.

Not a big R. Kelly fan by any means but he's written some great songs.

i have to admit "ignition" is the shit! i also think "flirt" is catchy even though it's gross. that's a good song but this guy cracks me up because he really things he's a living legend! i think a lot of others think of him that way too.

I hold disdain for R. Kelly.He is one of the reasons RAP, not hip hop, and R&B has been so blurred you don't know the fucking difference! I remember when his album with Public Announcement came out when I was about 5 and I only liked one song. Then his ass went solo and went downhill. I kinda liked "Keep on The Downlow" but then he made that PIECE OF DEAD MONKEY SHIT called "I Believe I Can Fly". Then he acted like he was born again to make him more popular with the public. The worse part about it was my brothers and cousins AND friends loved the hell outta that stupid bitch.

here 's a story about the song "Half On A Baby" :

when i was living in chicago back in the early 90's there was a guy i was dating.he and a female acquaintance entered a singing contest/competition.the phrase "half on a baby" came from my then- boyfriend and a friend of his(male)

in summary: the song nor the idea ISN'T original. i believe that R. Kelly was one of the judges.

lol lol Funny as hell. I really did not like that song either. And you are right. I can remember one of my wife's relatives got married and they played that song at the reception. My wife's cousin who got married mother and her father got on the dance floor with other older couples and started dancing to this garbage and her mother is a minister. Me and my wife got married the next year and said we were gonna have that song at our wedding reception. I said hell no or i will remain a bachelor. I ain't bragging but i won out. I like the quote about the steve harvey suits too.

I've wondered the same thing. He's talented no question about it but to me a genius can play all their instruments, do the albums themselves, create a sound that is uniquely theirs and change the course of musical history. R. Kelly doesn't come to mind when I think of a genius. Great songs but that's it.Just my 2 cents.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I don´t now why but I don´t like You are not alone. For me, it is one of MJ´s weakest songs. There are much stronger tracks on History - Stranger in Moscow, Earth song etc. I listen to it only when I watch the video.

I agree. I thought you are not alone was very weak. One of michael's lamest
tracks. I actually liked some of michael's ballads on invincible much better than this one.
