ZEITGEIST - Official Topic of the new Smashing Pumpkins: UPDATED It seems that some radios in the US are now playing the new song from their "Zeitgeist" album.
UPDATE First Impressions: Smashing Pumpkins - Zeitgeist http://blog.filter-mag.co...essio.html Release Date: 07/07/07 Tracklisting: 1. Doomsday Clock [3:41] 2. 7 Shades Of Black [3:15] 3. Orchid [3:58] 4. That's The Way [3:44] <- KEY TRACK 5. Tarantula [3:47] 6. Starz [3:41] 7. United States [9:50] 8. Never Lost [4:13] <- KEY TRACK 9. Bring The Light [3:35] 10. Come On (Let's Go) [3:15] 11. For God And Country [4:51] 12. Pomp And Circumstance [4:18] Background: * Produced by Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin, with Roy Thomas Baker and Terry Date working separately on various tracks. * Billed as a "reunion", though only Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin are present. * It's the first Smashing Pumpkins album since 2000's Machina suite. In the interm Corgan has done one Zwan album and one solo album. First Impressions: * Tracks #1 thru #7 are all aggresive, up-tempo guitar rock except for #4, "That's The Way", which is our guess for 1st single as it's the most "pop" track with a catchy verse and chorus. * "Never Lost" is one of the only ballad-y tracks. Like many of the Pumpkins' classics, it is low-key, but still driven by its composition and melodies. Plus there are strings. * The last two tracks are the only ones which are keyboard driven, with "Pomp And Circumstance" sporting timpani drums, choir-like vocals and squelching guitar. * Corgan's signature guitar tone is still as rich and forceful as it ever was. * As we have seen with the new lineup, Corgan's voice is what (supposedly) defines the Smashing Pumpkins as a band. But, much like in Zwan, here it seems that his natural angst is somewhat artificial and his screaming seems mellow in comparison the Pumpkins of the past. Prediction: * With the recent commercial success of new bands like Silversun Pickups, it's uncertain whether or not the those outside the core SP fanbase will feel the need to reacquaint themselves with Smashing Pumpkins. The new record is pretty good. The record shouldn't be listed under The Smashing Pumpkins, though. It's more along the style of Zwan and Billy Corgan's solo stuff. Looking forward to the "residence" at the Fillmore this summer.

Yeah, I've known him since before he was "Shepard Fairey," when he was just spray painting and posting stickers on street signs and went by the plain name of Frank. [Edited 5/20/07 21:21pm]

review please! I'm not really into "reviewing" things unless I'm being paid to. Mostly because I don't have the time to do it in one sitting and partially because I can't stay focused enough to come back to it.

Is this Smashing Pumpkins in name only, basically being Billy and Jimmy after two failed side projects (both Zwan and Billy's solo album that nobody bought).

A lot of nerve calling it the Smashing Pumpkins without the original lineup....Please tell me how this is supposed to be all that different from the Zwan/Billy's solo album? This time it will actually sounds like a Pumpkins' record?

The Zwan/Billy album didn't sell.....that band bombed! Billy can only be successful when he's calling the project the Smashing Pumpkins.....I'm afraid they will disappoint.....the Smashing Pumpkins are a'has been' since 'Mellon Collie.....'

What's with them touring only S.F & Asheville? I know Asheville has evolved into this little college town, but it still seems like an unlikely choice to play. That's so weird too.....to tour for days at the same venue. I think my brother's trying to go. I'll tell him to film it since cams are allowed. looking for you in the woods tonight Switch FC SW-2874-2863-4789 (Rum&Coke)

Isn't that what Prince just did in Vegas and will be doing in London?

Isn't that what Prince just did in Vegas and will be doing in London? Many artists play multiple dates in major cities.....but Asheville. I'm still shocked they picked there. looking for you in the woods tonight Switch FC SW-2874-2863-4789 (Rum&Coke)

At the very least, the follow ups had excellent singles ("Adore", "Perfect" from "Ava Adore" and "To Stand Inside Your Love" from the self indulgent and misguided "Machina").

Sounds like testing it out before really hitting the road. I mean hearing that both Darcy and James Iha are not involved proves that Billy didn't even try! He's just using the name. I'm hoping for a decent album but I do not have high hopes at all. It probably will be more Pumpkin like than his other outings, though. I just kind of hope that the public isn't totally fooled and that more than one music critic is pointing out what we all know....Billy is just using the name at this point because his other projects with Jimmy went nowhere!
