i have a feeling her moods dictate her statements and we haven't heard the last of her. it doesn't seem like she has much in the way of good moods these days, but maybe she'll be in a less-bad one sometime soon. confused

It's never occurred to me that the "Betty Davis" from the "she's got Betty Davis eyes" was Miles' wife... How have I always missed out on this connection?

Hey, you're right. I just checked othermusic.com and they have both CDs in their store. That wasn't the case last week. confused

I think I'm taking an extra long lunch tomorrow and stopping by to make a purchase.

Interesting bio on her. Damn she had larry graham, gregg erico, and the pointer sisters in her camp on her earliest work before the pointer sisters and gcs even broke out. No wonder her music sounds funky. She even wrote some songs for the commodores before they broke out big with motown. I downloaded a few of her tracks and they are pretty damn impressive. She was way ahead of her time. She was doing in the early 70's what kelis, joi gilliam, etc. are doing now. She sounds far better than the overrated amy winehouse. Sorry amy fans i just ain't feeling her. She is in a strange recluse. I would like to hear more from her and her work. Maybe she is just in another place now and have no interest in what she did musically in the 70's.

my guess is that she knew how great her music was and she's been bitter all these years because she feels chewed up and spit out by the industry. there are probably personal issues we have no clue about, and those issues are likely best kept private. whatever the reason, it's a shame. i hope with the success of her remasters, she's able to smile a little about all the people discovering her in the here and now. better late than never, ya know...

I must admit, that before buying these albums, I had not heard one note. Betty Davis seemed relatively low risk--a sista that plays funk-rock and as someone here mentioned, was an obvious influence on Nikka Costa whom I already love. So I put the first album 'Betty Davis' into my computer and put on the headphones.

WOWIE ZOWIE, this is some crazy-ass funk! eyepop

The rock element is a lot stronger than I expected which I love. The extra tracks are really good too especially "Come Take Me". And the band is hot too. How can it not be with all those big names? This album is pretty much perfect.

'They Say I'm Different' is mighty fine too although less rock-oriented than the first album. My favorite song is the last one "Special People".

I want to play these CDs loud for everyone I know.

oh my god, i love that feeling. cloud9

the first time i really REALLY heard betty was when i stumbled across a download of her "this is it" best-of anthology, and i was FUCKING FLOORED. i couldn't believe i'd gone through 36 years of life without getting hipped to this. it was like discovering prince and discovering bowie all over again. you know those rare moments when you discover a new artist and you know it's going to re-shape the way you listen to everything else? god, that experience is SO RARE. and i felt it with betty, the first time i heard all those songs. they were ALL SO GOOD, every single one. there are some songs i like more than others, but I LOVE THEM ALL. nod

"come take me" is a hot tune...it's a shame it wasn't originally released on the album, though i'm glad we at least got it as a bonus track.

her album "nasty gal" REALLY needs the remaster/re-issue treatment. i'm wondering if maybe it isn't my favorite of her albums. "F-U-N-K" and "dedicated to the press" kick my ass every time i hear them. it's just like her music bulldozes its way directly into the middle of me and shakes the hell outta me. i love it. love, love, love it. bow

anyway.... lol redface

Perhaps the label is waiting to see how well these albums sell before going ahead with remastering 'Nasty Gal' also? I would love to hear that one.

i think 'nasty gal' was released on a different label, and the first two albums were released on a smaller label, so there was less problems with getting the rights for the remasters. this is what i'm understanding, anyway. i think 'nasty gal' might have been on island records?

You are correct. I remember reading in the liner notes that her contract was bought out after the second album and she changed labels.

Don't know 'bout y'all but I'm having a funkin' goodtime time! First with the Sly & FS remasters and now with these Betty Davis ones. All we need now is some Graham Central Station reissues to make the cycle complete (though there are some Ohio Players Westbound reissues to go cop).
