Which Beatles album should I buy?

Obviously I know the massive hits, but I don't really want to start with a hits compilation... so which album would you recommend to a complete beginner?

I prefer the sound of their later stuff... the early work sounds a bit cheesey for me.

Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

the white album, definitely. that or abbey road. i think those are both really eclectic albums that will keep you busy for a while.

You should start with Revolver, an ideal combination of the old and new stuff and a perfect introduction. If you like it, move on to the best albums: The White Album, Sgt. Pepper and Abbey road.

I think to start with Probably

Rubber Soul or Sgt Pepper or Magical Mystery Tour are good beginners

then

Revolver and Abby Road or Let it Be

then

White Album

But honestly, any of them, they are all very accessable, with White ALbum and Abby road the hardest to ingest (though they are fantastic)

White Album--best "classic rock" album. Too ecclectic for some folks
Abbey Road--Polished pop & the greatest side 2 in all music.
Let It Be--Almost forgotten despite the massive hits, nice soulful rock
Revolver--psychedelic middle beatles. Best song collection?
Sgt Pepper--maybe overrated, but seamless perfection in an album
Magical Mystery Tour--the best and the worst? patchy psychedelica

When I got into The Beatles stuff over 20 years ago I bought them in the following order- Sgt Pepper, Abbey Road, Let It Be, Revolver, White Album,Rubber Soul,Magical Mystery Tour, help!, With The Beatles, Hard Days Night, Beatles For Sale and Please Please Me. Treat yourself to 'Anthology 3', Harrison's 'All Things Must Pass' and Lennon's 'Plasic Ono Band' and 'Imagine' cd's.

Once you start getting in to the Beatles you'll probably end up wanting all of there albums anyway. That's what happened to me. I've even got the 3 anthology and live at the BBC sets now.
