top 5 greatest guitar solos you ever heard

what's your choice ???
mine is
1)eddie van halen -beat it -ultimate guitar solo

2)nuno from extreme-decadance dance -brian may ,eddie van halen and bach in solo

3)jimi hendrix-voodoo chile slight return -need i say more?

4)prince-purple rain-i know that many other love version have better soloing but album version really have some magic in the way prince played

little trivia oscar winning actor forrest whittaker said about purple rain"i love when he (prince) jams on guitar"-i agree smile

5)clapton-why does love got to be so sad live from filmore 1970-amazing playing by eric, who would say it's the same player considering how diffrent eric plays now days

in its own category -ernie isley-who's that lady-like christopher lambert would say in highlander:magic

Too many to call, but here are 5 of my ALL-TIME FAVORITES off the dome:

1. Prince -- "ICNTTPOYM" (movie version)

2. Prince -- "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," RRHOF Induction Ceremony 2.04

3. Jimi Hendrix -- "Machine Gun" (live)

4. Prince -- "Rock Hard In A Funky Place"

5. Ernie Isley -- "Who Loves You Better, Pts. 1 and 2"

IN no particular order:

1.Prince-"Purple House":Sweet blues jam on the Rave 2000 DVD where he really stretches out and shows how truly tasty of a player he can be.

2.Dean DeLeo(Stone Temple Pilots)-"Sin":SOme great fusion inspired stuff over some really knotty chord changes. Seriously one of the best solos I've ever heard, it totally gives me a feeling in my gut!

3.Jimi Hendrix-"Machine Gun":Hendrix paints a picture of war using his guitar that includes explosions and the screams of the dead. Nothing else out there like it before or since.

4.Dave Navarro-"Ocean Size": Some great straight up rock soloing from early in DAve's career. Shows a bit of some of the greatness to come on future records.

5.Andres Segovia-"The Old Castle":An arrangement of Mussorgsky's piano and later orchestral piece that truly shows that the guitar is, in the words of the man himself, an "Orchestra In A Box."

Miles

I'm gonna be nice and predictable here - 'Machine Gun', Fillmore East '69-'70.

I can get lost in it all, as Jimi did,and it almost makes me cry.

Same goes in a different way for Frank Zappa's 'Pink Napkins', from 'Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar' - translucent beauty. Zappa was bitter and cynical, but he revealed his soul through many of his guitar solos, whether he knew/ liked it or not.

The other 3 for me would most likely be Hendrix and Zappa solos too.

live?

i don't know that i've heard a great range of mindblowing guitar solos live, despite all the shows i've seen. i could list tons of prince solos, just from the musicology tour alone, but that's no fun for this thread. hmmm

thurston moore ripping up "disconnection notice" at a sonic youth show in ohio a few years back would definitely go on my list.

joey santiago was pretty impressive during the pixies reunion tour as well. can't remember any specific songs, but he kicked ass pretty much all the way through.

can't think of many other guitar god moments (again, other than prince, but DUH) from my experiences, but i'm sure more will come to me...

Great tunes.

Revelation is one of those songs I could play (and have) 20 times in a row and not get tired of it.

Looking For Another Pure Love, along with Jeff Beck, has another of my favorite players on rhythm, Buzzy Feiten.
You should hear some of his solos on Paul Butterfield's...

My parents had that one. I haven't heard it for a loong time. "march all along, love as much as I can..." I didn't know he played on the stevie album, too.

on Revelation, at the end, Robben hits all those notes that other guitarists just don't seem to hit. I keep trying to add them to my own playing, but I have a way to go.

Chalk up another one for "Machine Gun."

Also, anything by Johnny Winter, Allan Holdsworth and John McLaughlin is pretty tops, in my honest opinion.

Don't need to list 5. One stands alone far and away anything else that has been done which is known to mankind. Nothing can touch this because it's simply not in the same galaxy.

well there's plenty of cool sounding solos, or just catchy ones, or technically dazzling ones but here's some guitar performances off the top of the dome that I feel stand out for their emotional resonance, evocative or transportative power or their epic feel

Maggot Brain-Funkadelic (Eddie Hazel)
Firth Of Fifth-Genesis (Steve Hackett)
"Woodstock Improvisation"-Jimi Hendrix
Just My Imagination-Some short guy from Minneapolis wink
Starless-King Crimson (Robert Fripp)
Marquee Moon-Television (Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine)
That Lady-Isley Brothers (Ernie Isley)
Midnight Rambler-The rolling stones (Keith Richards)
Blues At My Baby's House-Buddy Guy
Layla-Derek & The Dominoes (Eric Clapton and Duane Allman)
Cause We've Ended Now As Lovers-Jeff Beck
The Interworld and The New Innocence-Praxis (Buckethead)

annnd at least one Bass performance that fits the bill

Munchies For Your Love-Bootsy's Rubber Band

You know Aud, in a way, I favor Star Spangled. One reason is because it's so fucking melodic and pretty. I'm talking his Woodstock version. He sounded like a trumpet and violin in the sky, roaring out of the clouds from heaven. Then u have his studio version, which is simply beautiful. Total blueprint of what Brian May with Queen ended up doing on damn near all of their albums (God Save The Queen) is a direct take from Jimi's studio version of Spangled. That said, Machine Gun STILL is something else altogether. It's beyond description. Anybody ever wondering why in the fuck Hendrix gets so much praise, if u have this, please play this for the person in question. You don't even have to say anything. Just play it. As far as a mere solo from some cat that can play some phrases, bends some notes and do some exotic scales with taste and flash, that shit can't even hold a cup of water compared to the ocean of Jimi's Machine Gun.
