Maxwell - "Closer"

Okay i'm officially slow. After all these years of owning the MTV Unplugged: Maxwell cd, i'm just realizing that the very last song "Gotta Get: Closer" is not his original song, but a cover of the Nine Inch Nails "Closer" song. I knew the hookline sounded familiar, I just thought he sought of borrowed that part when he sung it live, but just now i'm realizing the whole song is a cover.

Just shoot me now. neutral
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

It really doesn't have that much to do with the original version. He could have just as well changed all of the lyrics and called it his own.

True.

And "Closer" was off the hook.

razz

I just like the soul that Maxy puts in it. Kate sounds a bit stiff.

call me deprived but i don't have any Kate Bush but i always thought it was dope that a brother covered a song about child bearing. this song was a hit for Maxwell. the way he sang it so delicately was on point. don't have his unplugged album. the best thing about NIN's closer was the video

Maxwell says "I want to LOVE you like an animal" instead. If you think that James Brown meets Prince rendition is "Praise The Lord" ish, congrats. You've just discovered gospel's influences on soul music.
