CRACKING THREAD

On a related note... I've just heard "Falling in love" from the Off The Wall record for the first time in years and it totally floored me. They just don't make music like that these days. :waves stick in the air:

I know it's a classic. I am glad in a way songs like that and "I can't Help it", "Lady in My Life" and much of the stuff he did with the Jacksons were never release or didn't do well commercially, because those are the songs that have gone on to be hidden gems. These are the types of songs you only hear at night on Quiet Storm radio or at clubs during the "rare groove "hour. They are wonderful songs hidden away and really illustrate the true essence of what Michael use to be about.

The only word I don´t agree with.
"When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

CoolMF

Once again, this is a great thread and HUGE PROPS go to BBoy for putting all of this up. Like someone else said on here, I really enjoy and appreciate reading about the composition and recording of great music and this thread has been soooo insightful. I'm having a busy day at work but it's gonna be a long day because I keep taking time out to check this thread for more updates and info. This makes me want to go to my mom's attic, did through my stuff, and find my old "Michael vs. Prince" issue of Right On!

Also, great looking out, BBoy, with these pictures. Some of these are pics that I haven't seen in 25 years, like the 45 cover of "The Girl Is Mine".

Really good stuff, man. Tito, pass me some tissue...

Excellent thread! thumbs up! Here's some more info/trivia about the album.Bboy87,feel free to correct me if I'm wrong wink

***The song "Thriller" was originally titled "Starlight Love".I have a feeling that Michael asked Rod Temperton to come up with lyrics about a night of horror. As we all know,Michael was really into scary movies, monsters, ghosts, etc.

***It's been reported that Rod offered Michael the song "Mystery" for 'Thriller' but it was left off the album. In 1983,it was recorded by The Manhattan Transfer. In 1986,it was recorded by Anita Baker for her 'Rapture' album.

***In early 1982,Quincy was producing an album for Donna Summer, which was released in August.'Thriller' came out several months later and if you listen to both albums, you will notice some similarities. Both albums feature a loud rock song which features a guitar solo by a prominent rock musician ("Protection" on Donna's album features guitar by Bruce Springsteen while "Beat It" on Michael's album features a guitar solo by Eddie Van Halen). The first single from Donna's album,"Love Is In Control (Finger On The Trigger)",is similiar to "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" on Michael's album. Both albums end with a ballad that's tailor-made for Quiet Storm radio ("Lush Life" on Donna's album,"The Lady In My Life" on Michael's album).

***isn't it amazing that Michael didn't do videos for all the singles? Imagine the videos he could have done for hits like "Wanna Be Startin Something","Human Nature" and "P.Y.T".

***does anyone else think it's funny that the album includes a song called "Baby Be Mine" that is followed by a song called "The Girl Is Mine"? lol

Everything is accurate except about Starlight. The song went from "Give Me Some Starlight" to "Starlight Sun" then "Starlight" to "Thriller"

I read one review saying that Wanna Be Startin Somethin was similar to Don't Stop Til You Get Enough....well there's a reason: Wanna Be Startin Somethin was originally intended for Off The Wall. A couple of Michael's songs are reused(kinda like how Prince does):

-Wanna Be Startin Somethin-originally written for Off The Wall
-Be Not Always-written in 1979(OTW era), released on Victory in 1984
-Liberian Girl-originally intended for Victory as "Pyramid Girl", released on Bad in 1987
-half of the Dangerous album was intended for the unreleased "Decade" album(In The Closet, Heal The World, Black or White, Who Is It, Will You Be There, Gone Too Soon)
-The original version of Black or White was recorded for Bad
-Little Susie from 1995's HIStory was originally written in 1979.
-Blood on The Dancefloor and Superfly Sister were recorded for Dangerous
-Morphine and Is It Scary were intended for HIStory

eek I didn´t know that! Damn, I have no time these days to spend more time here and read all this thoroughly.

That's because fans on those boards are more into the "King of Pop". Their favourite albums are Bad, Dangerous and History. There into Michael "Heal The World" Jackson, as oppose to Michael Jackson, the handsome, brown-skinned brotha who had a whole load of funk.!!
[Edited 5/11/07 9:57am]

You got that right! Some fans think of him as Michael Jackson- the dancer. His music is more important to me. It changed alot of people's lives, including mine smile .I've always felt whatever happens, in appearance or sound, he'll always be the same Michael Jackson to me. He's just put too much pressure on himself throughout the years to be perfect, whereas I've enjoyed seeing the more natural side of him. Remember when he got pissed about the surgery question in Living With Michael Jackson? He had that "don't fuck with me, bitch" look lol The Poppa Joe in him started showing lol

lol I looooove that side of MJ!

While we are talking about the 25th Anniversary of "Thriller" and "1999", my favorite memory of the two albums is the time my sister and I went to the carnival. We went to one of the game booths where you throw a dart, hit a balloon, and win a prize. The prizes were those mirrors that had a picture of an album cover on it. Anybody remember those? My sister got a "Thriller" mirror and I got a "1999" mirror that same day. Two years later, I got a "Purple Rain" mirror.

My sister's "Thriller" mirror got broke the same year she got it when she was fighting with my other sister. I still have both my Prince mirrors to this very day.....growing up, I kept all my shit at my grandmother's house so those evil siblings of mine couldn't fuck with it when they got mad at me. lol

Anything with Prince on it seemed cool. even those mirrors. I never thought Prince could sell out or be uncool. He was punk funk. Those mirrors were at my fair too!

THRILLER 25-Part 5: Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'

WANNA BE STARTIN' SOMETHIN'

written by Michael Jackson in 1978 or 1979

Inspired by media pressure Michael faced at the time and would continue to face to this day. The song was also
inspired by family problems between his sisters in law over jealousy towards older sister LaToya.

Wanna Be Startin Somethin was the first song written for Thriller.
"It's a song which I had written when we were recording Off The Wall," said Michael, who wouldn't submit the
song to Quincy until the Thriller/Starlight sessions. It's a song that disappointed Michael, songwriting-wise.
"Songwriting is a very frustrating art form," says Michael in a 1999 TV Guide interview, "You have to get on tape
exactly what's playing in your head. When I hear it up here(pointing to his head),it's wonderful- then I have to transcribe that on
tape."

The original demo sounds very similar to the released version. The background vocals from the demo were
later used on the released version.

Wanna Be Startin Somethin shot to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts after the airing of Michael's
performance of "Billie Jean" during the Motown 25 special.

Peaked at #5 on the Hot 100 and R&B charts and #8 in the UK.

The song chosen to open The Jacksons' Victory Tour in 1984 and Michael's BAD World Tour in 1987-1989.
Also performed during the 1992-93 Dangerous World Tour and 1996-97 HIStory World Tour

Wanna Be Startin Somethin remains one of Michael's biggest dance cuts.

Hot 100:#5
R&B:#5

Australia:25
Austria:not charted
Belgium:#3
France:#20

The single sold 1,800,000 copies
