Great thread, bboy. I wish I expereinced the Thriller days. I was alive back than, but thanks to stupid communism, which was here at that time and which forbid any "western" stuff to get in, I got to experience only one percent of it.

That's sad, because that was truly MJ at his peak, when the commercial acclaim matched the critical acclaim. So for those of you who were too young, not alive or lived in regimes that did not allow you to experience Thriller it's ashame, because you miss something that was truely special.

It was completely different from the Bad and Dangerous eras, which were being hyped up even before the albums were release creating big expectations and in the end many people were disappointed with the product. Thriller was one surprise after another. It was like seeing something take on a life of it's own, with a performance here, a video here. It was a rollercoaster ride that I will remember forever.

While we are talking about the 25th Anniversary of "Thriller" and "1999", my favorite memory of the two albums is the time my sister and I went to the carnival. We went to one of the game booths where you throw a dart, hit a balloon, and win a prize. The prizes were those mirrors that had a picture of an album cover on it. Anybody remember those? My sister got a "Thriller" mirror and I got a "1999" mirror that same day. Two years later, I got a "Purple Rain" mirror.

My sister's "Thriller" mirror got broke the same year she got it when she was fighting with my other sister. I still have both my Prince mirrors to this very day.....growing up, I kept all my shit at my grandmother's house so those evil siblings of mine couldn't fuck with it when they got mad at me. lol

I had one of those Purple Rain mirrors! Tell me I'm not the only one who practiced drawing out the pointy PR title lettering!

I was there . . . I was 10 years old, and Thriller was my first album that I ever got. Looking back, it was an amazing era for MJ and I am proud of that album.

I can imagine. I got to experience fully the History era, which is when Mike came to Prague as well. And a little of Dangerous era. I remember those eras as huge. I mean I can´t think of any other artist being ever that big, so sometimes it is hard to imagine what the Thriller days must have been like. I got to know Moonwalk like my whole life. It must have been so cool experiencing its "birth".

Part 2 will be on The Girl Is Mine. The most boring song on the LP, I know but I'm going in the order how the singles were released:

The Girl Is Mine is the only song on "Thriller" that I actually dislike. Even MJ has said that he doesn't care too much for the song. I think he said the only song that he was completely satisfied with was "Billie Jean" and for good reason too. Billie Jean is one of the greatest pop songs ever.
"And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ heart

"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always heart

By Moonwalk do you mean the film, or the dance move? 'Cause the moonwalk was around a long-ass time before Jackson trademarked it.

The dance move. Well, that´s why the word birth is in quotation marks. I know it existed before, but did pll actually knew about it? I don´t know. I always got the impression that they didn´t.

That's because fans on those boards are more into the "King of Pop". Their favourite albums are Bad, Dangerous and History. There into Michael "Heal The World" Jackson, as oppose to Michael Jackson, the handsome, brown-skinned brotha who had a whole load of funk.!!

Yep, but there are still some cool sites/forums out there for old-school fans. Like this one:

Michael Sembello, who wrote Carousel, put his original version on his website. It's longer and includes more lyrics.
Michael's version was circulating in bad quality for a long time as "Circus Girl". It's close to 4 minutes. The version on the Thriller Special Edition was edited to barely to 2. Someone remastered the unedited version along with Hot Street recently on the Michael Jackson Vault

The Special Edition originally included more outtakes and demos:
Got The Hots
Starlight

The SE of Off The Wall was going to include You Can't Win, Sunset Driver, the demo of Rock With You and Bad was going to include the original version of Someone Put Your Hand Out and other songs. Not to mention the SE of Dangerous that was going to be a 2CD set mad but that's when the "problems" with Epic/Sony got worse(it had been going on since 1998) and the reissues were re-arranged

Part 4 will be up later. It's all about Beat It

THRILLER 25-Beat It

BEAT IT

written by Michael Jackson

"Beat It" featured a legendary guitar solo, inspired by the song "Eruption" by Eddie Van Halen. Eddie was called by Quincy Jones to
guest on the song, but at first, Van Halen thought someone was prank calling him, before establishing proper communication
with Jones and recorded his part completely free of charge.

"I did it as a favor" said Van Halen, "I was a complete fool, according to the rest of the band, our manager,
and everyone else. I was not used. I knew what I was doing-I don't do something unless I want to do it.

Michael and Quincy took a skeleton version of the song to Eddie's home because they wanted him to solo
over the verse section. Quincy thought it was too rough so Steve Lukather, who also worked on the song, reduced
the distorted guitar sound.

It was the third single from "Thriller", following "Billie Jean". Frank Dileo, who as VP at Epic Records at the time
and who would go on to become Michael's manager, convinced everyone that Beat It should be released
whilst Billie Jean was still heading toward the #1 spot, and predicted both singles would be in the top 10 at the
same time.

On the Billboard Hot 100, Billie Jean was replaced by Dexy Midnight Runners' "Come On Eileen", which spent
a lone week at #1 before Michael reclaimed the top spot with "Beat It". Both singles occupied Top 5 positions
a feat only matched by the Bee Gees, Olivia Newton-John, Linda Ronstadt, and Donna Summers in the
1970s. Beat It was #1 on the Hot 100 for three weeks and the R&B chart for one week and peaked at #3 in the UK.

The short film, directed by Bob Giraldi, financed to the price of $140,000 by Michael himself when CBS got cold feet. The film was
shot in in East Los Angeles. One incident during the filming was a stabbing that occured just above Michael when he was
walking through the restaurant.
The cast included 18 professional dancers and four break dancers, choreographed by Michael Peters, and real life
gang members from the Crips and Bloods.

Rolling Stone voted it the #1 video in both Critics and Reader's Poll and later inducted into the Music
Video Producer's Hall of Fame.

Featured in the National Highwa Safety Commission's anti-drunk driving campaign in the United States and included on the
accompanying NHSC promo album. Michael was given a special award from President Ronald Reagan at the White House
for his support of the campaign.

Eddie joined The Jacksons on stage to perform Beat It during the Jacksons' Victory Tour on July 4, 1984 in Dallas.

Ranked #4 "World's Favorite Song" by UK coters in Sony Ericsson's global poll in 2005.

CoolMF

Great article and great thread. Thanks. I was in elementary school when Thriller came out. I had the poster of him in the yellow vest and pants on my wall. I was very young, but I remember Thriller-mania like it was yesterday. I remember the day that I was the shit at school because I learned the moonwalk and was able to teach other people.

In 2007, it's no longer my favorite MJJ album. I prefer Dangerous and Bad. Thriller sounds too dated. I never liked "Baby Be Mine" (don't know why, but it never grabbed me), and many of the songs ("Wanna Be", "Thriller", "Beat It") just sound too '80's to me. But "Girl Is Mine" and "Lady In My Life" are timeless and I can still stand to play the album all the way through every now and then.

Like I said, I remember Thriller like it was yesterday. This thread is really bringing me back. I forgot that it wasn't the be-all-to-end-all when it came out. But once the videos started rolling, the Motown performance, the Making of Thriller video (huge, especially for those that didn't have MTV), the peer pressure of rocking the red or black Beat-It-zipper jacket and/or a glittery glove...dude- Michael was a giant among men back then. Even the stuff that he allowed his voice on- the Rockwell song, We Are The World, the Victory stuff, I'm rambling.

I remember the Victory tour (and Chris Bliss, the juggling opening act) at Texas Stadium and it was cool, even though I really only wanted to see Michael instead of the entire family.

nod music You got me reminiscing about high school now! lol

Thriller is 25 now, eh? I think it WOULD be difficult for anyone who wasn't around at the time to understand how HUGE it and MJ were at the time! I agree with others, we'll never see anything like that again. Sure, these stupid AI phenoms get a ton of attention, but that is pure hype...there was no hype around MJ/Thriller, he/it WERE nearly universally beloved.

But as someone else pointed out, the subsequent albums were hyped up big time. In fact, I remember being glad I was going to be out of the U.S. (in South Korea!) for a year starting in late 1987: I thus avoided most of the MJ/Bad hype!! lol

It would be interesting to see weekly sales totals for Thriller in the U.S. I wonder how much it really was selling per week at its peak?!

I just LOVE the BJ demo on the SE, it cracks me up every time! giggle

The fact that Thriller never went straight to Number 1(Not that many albums did at the time in the first place) and practically climbed to Nr 1 illustrates the lack of hype and the rollercoaster ride that Thriller had. Compare that with Bad and Dangerous which were hyped up big time on their release, went to straight to Nr 1 and then after a couple of months just tailed off.

great pictures. I haven´t seen some of them.

The part I highlighted describes all too many albums these days! disbelief

While the chart positions are interesting, I'd still love to see the weekly sales totals!

Thanks for the numbers, bboy87.

this a bit off topic, but I've read the name of the Decade project a lot of times, but I never understood what it was?

What songs were 2 b included? What was the purpose?
