I just picked it up, and i LOVE it! He is very influenced by Prince...among others including rock, funk, electro-clash, and hip-hop..

Can i have someone please give a comprehensive description of this artist and this particular album.....it's really good....i think award winning (if u think winning a grammy is important)

Like Lauryn Hill's Miseducation masterpiece and Bob Marley's Uprising, K-Os's Atlantis: Hymns for Disco flows with a constant emphasis on moving forward with positivity and unity, all within an impossibly funky package. The combination of strong melodies and K-Os's verbal dexterity means that Atlantis is filled with a brilliance that rarely lets up. Opening track "Electrik Heat: The Seekwill" sets the tone by mixing rapid-fire lyrics with '80s hip-hop beats and samples, courtesy of world-renowned turntablist Lil Jaz. K-Os’s soul-filled vocals take center stage on "The Rain," with all the smoothness of Stevie Wonder or Marvin Gaye circa 1966. K-Os could unquestionably release a whole disc of such songs and easily hit world stardom, instead, Atlantis is his vision, and his vision tends towards delivering lyrically insightful, cross-generational hip-hop mixed with reggae and even rock. "Valhalla" is another high point, reminiscent of Bob Dylan's cadence in "Highway 61 Revisited," juxtaposed with a floating chorus courtesy of friend/rocker Sam Roberts. One gets a sense that K-Os and crew have truly brought their top game to this disc, with no words or sounds wasted. --Denise Sheppard


Mythology in Hip-Hop
Well, K-os has done it again … "Atlantis: Hymns for Disco" is his third classic album in just three tries, and has solidified his spot as one of my top ten emcees of all time. He is one of very few rappers who has the unique ability to blend opposites so easily. He is both serious and fun. Both conscious and perplexed. Both classically-influenced and currently-influential. Both hip-hop and bigger than hip-hop. His music goes beyond any genre, and represents the true correlation that can exist between artist, soul and sound.

And in the process, K-os talks about some wonderfully magnificent and intelligent topics. "Atlantis: Hymns for Disco" has several mythological references. In one song, he references Isis, the queen goddess of Egyptian mythology who represents the role of mother and wife. In another, he references King Midas, a character in Greek mythology who had the ability to turn everything he touched into gold. In yet another, K-os references Valhalla, a hall in Norse mythology that is the home for those slain gloriously in battle, and valkyries, the female deities who carried the most heroic warriors to the hall where they became spirits. And let’s not forget the album title Atlantis, which was an island in Greek philosophy that supposedly sunk into the sea after a failed attempt to invade Athens, yet which is generally seen as a myth created by Plato in order to illustrate his political theories. Interesting stuff, huh?

Got hipped to this by a friend. EASILY one of my fave albums this millenium yet. I think it's quite seldom to find somebody who can both sing and rap in a convincing manner and have great, diverse songs as well. I will have to check his older stuff out as well. BTW, allmusic gave his a 3,5 stars review. Fools.

A talented cat. I love "Superstarr Pt. 0," which is why I bought the album. Listenable, but nothing really to write home about from my perspective. He's a great alternative to what passes for "hip-hop" these days.

glad i got some response....i guess the album hasn't caught on with alot of people like say Amy Winehouse did.....i am well aware that this is not a hip-hop board but i thought that his album would really appeal to more people here and would get more threads than Amy Winehouse.....oh well guess you can never really know what the public would gravitate to...

Im listening to Atlantic right now. My favorite cut today was "Mirror In The Sky".

"Highway 7" off this album has a strong Prince feel to it. Throw in a falsetto flourish here and there and this song easily could've come off The Truth.
