forget 'Out Of The Blue'.....I think ELO's best album is 'Discovery' (1979) Shine A Little Love Confusion Need Her Love The Diary Of Horace Wimp Last Train To London Midnight Blue On The Run Wishing Don't Bring Me Down I recently bought all of ELO's remastered CDs and I'm enjoying 'Discovery' the most. It's their most consistent album and every song is excellent."Confusion" has to be their most underrated song....a perfectly produced track! Many fans diss this album because of the disco elements but I think "Shine A Little Love" and "Last Train To London" are fantastic songs. Two of their best singles! It was 1979,a time when nearly everybody was "discofying" their music, somewhat, lol. Of course, the rocking "Don't Bring Me Down" is another obvious highlight, and it's hard not to appreciate the wonderful "Diary Of Horace Wimp",which is classic ELO....eerie and mesmerizing at the same time.I remember this album when it came out but I didn't buy it back then. Now I see what I've been missing all these years! To me,this album is stronger and more focused than 'Out Of The Blue' Don't get me wrong,I think 'Out Of The Blue' is great but I can't see why so many fans think it's their masterpiece. The first seven or eight songs are superb (especially "Turn To Stone","Sweet Talking Woman","Night In The City" and "Starlight") but I think it runs out of steam at the halfway point. The second half loses focus somewhat and it's not quite the big, important 2-record set that it could have been.Still a brilliant album though. | |
