Like I said before, two people can get something completely different from reading the same book. This is no different. No one is the authority on what the song means, not even me and if you paid attention to everything I said you would realize that. The rest of you say you know 100% what that song is about, but your name is not John Mayer. Every piece of art is open to interpretation You are right when you say that every piece of art is open to interpretation, though I think by comparing the work in question to some of John's other work, you can come closer to truly understanding his intentions. The majority of John's lyrics are not English major-double entendre-word geek type stuff. Generally he says what he means and even when he does use metaphors or similes, they're usually on topic and only serve to make his obvious point said in a little more interesting way. That said, if he really WAS trying to write "Daughters" about what you said it was about, I think he failed miserably because if he WAS trying to make some thinly veiled, sexist point, he really didn't allude to it at all, except if you misinterpret the "you are the god and the weight of her world" line (in which he is speaking to the father.) I think this is a great thread, it'd be fun to interpret lyrics and music like this. We rarely have discussions like this on the Org! [Edited 5/14/07 13:23pm]

Janfriend said:[quote] Rhondab said: What is there to overcome? Besides, we got into two different conversations: one about the song and then one about society Actually adding the word "some" or even rephrasing it wouldn't change the true meaning of the song but just make it CLEARER for you to hear the meaning.
I'm still trying to figure why you and others on here can't accept that we have different views of what the song means? I understand it is human nature to want to be the authority, but really none of you have the authority on this song and that seems to be hard for some to grasp. I never told anybody their interepretaion of this song was wrong or ignorant. I never tried to personally discount anyone to make my point. I said this is what the songs means to me, this is how I see it. Some of you can't accept that and say "ok, this is how I see it" as opposed to "This is what I know and you're wrong." You're telling me you know what the song means for a fact and I am flat out wrong. That in itself is wrong and it not a good way to debate [Edited 5/13/07 8:05am] oh whatever Jan.... if you can't see that having positive male role models for girls is needed, oh well. too many women in the world to discount my point though....

You all must realize you are speaking to a Janet Jackson fan. This is the type of person that will argue until they are blue in the face, ESPECIALLY when they are wrong. "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." -Dr. Seuss

You're still incapable of contributing anything constructive to the conversation. Throwing insults must make you feel better about the problems you have in your own life. Being a Janet fan has nothing to do with this thread. If you paid attention, you would know I rarely talk about Janet here on the org

I am a little curious of opinions of Father In You but that might be best left alone. ROFL!! Well damn, now I GOTTA print the lyrics Mary J. Blige, "Father In You" Can I talk to you, baby When I was a little girl, I didn't have a father And that's why I'm leaning on you... When I was a baby, I didn't get a hug from daddy That's why I need a hug from you... Ohh, it's not easy And I thank you for putting up with me When you don't have a daddy's love To say that you... (To say that I'm your little girl) Are his little girl... (Oh why didn't you love me) And give you the love... (I need love yeah yeah yeah yeah) you really deserve... (And I believe I deserve it and that's why, oh) [chorus] That's why I need The father in you (I need the father in you, baby) That's why I need (Please don't hurt me please) The father in you That's why I need (Oh that's why) The father in you (Really need you) That's why I need (Please be true) The father in you Oh, things got bad To the point where mommy couldn't hold us down And that's when it hurt me so much to see her To see her cry... (Oh don't cry, momma, don't cry momma, don't) Each and every night... (We're gonna be alright that's what I used to say) I said that some day (That I would try to take his place) But it was too hard (It was so hard trying to be a man and a woman and that's why I need the father in you) [chorus] That's why I need (oh I needed) The father in you (I put my trust on you) That's why I need (Please don't let me down) The father in you That's why I need The father in you (I need the father in you) That's why I need (Hold my hand) The father in you [Breakdown] Because we never had one at home No, no, no, as a little girl So I understand, why daddy couldn't be there Cause it's so obvious nobody taught him how to be father either Oh and I'm not sayin this to reminisce on the past I'm just saying this to make you understand that I needed a father And this is my problem, this is why I couldn't keep no one This is why I couldn't stay alone, I was so scared alone Every woman needs a man and I don't think she understands That she really needs a father the father in you, my brother She really needed the father, the father in you When your wife is speaking fellas, pay attention Yeah, don't ignore her, no,no,no I really need the father in you
