In the words of Florida Evans.....damn, damn, DAMN. Some people just fall off I guess. This is sad.

its not a matter of falling off..its a continued pattern...some shows are great and some are horrible...you just never know what to expect.

Yeah, but it is a pattern that developed later in her career, because I saw her countless times and always ranked her shows as some of the best I'd experienced. And I am VERY critical when it comes to concerts. So, this drop off has come as a shock to me.

I agree. I only saw her once many years ago, I think she was touring with her second album, and the show was amazing. She played much longer than an hour, gave all she had to her performance and the crowd was really into it.And she did not project any type of negative chip on her shoulder attitude. So I was surprised to read these accounts of her current tour.

I didn't see any of her cd's at the show.

I would hope her sexuality would have absolutely nothing to do with them performing with her. That would be insane!

And wow, I haven't read many interviews but the few I read seemed pretty positive. That's too bad.

She was part of the Montrex Jazz fest here in ATL last year and did a free set. If i'm not mistaken it was almost identical to the one I paid for...except she was much nicer for the free gig. LoL

I just wonder if she is going thru something mentally, like a depression.
You just never know.

I'm not pissed like other folks. I do feel like my money was wasted (and money DOES matter 2nite 4 me~LoL) but I'm not mad. I just hope the sista is okay and will work whatever out so she can get back to the positive thang.

Ah well... We're only human after all... (anyone here like Level 42? LoL)

I sure hope not (a depression or experiencing homophobia)---I mean, thats stupid to me also, if thats whats stopping people from playing with her---thats what I read on her wikipedia page, but thats site is not the gospel, ya know

I like Level 42---'Something about you was the JAM'!

*Yes, that show does sound like it was horrible all around. I can't make excuses for her throwing water on folks eek Maybe she's got some shit going on, I'm hoping it'll clear up before she hits the Bay lol

*calling MeShell a man is just dumb - who gives a fuck if you're attracted to her or not? It's just overwhelmingly stupid...

*I've seen her live about 4 times over several years & I've never been disappointed. Yes, anyone can have a bad show. In fact her last show she was late to the stage & played for what seemed like less than an hour but she STILL kicked my ass...

*I have yet to see her live where she didn't play at least 80% NEW MATERIAL - get used to it, it's always good anyway so wtf are you really complaining about? Go put on the record lol this is what she does, tries out the new shit...

*I'm hoping things will go well @ the SF show & if not, hey, it's not the end of the world. She's an amazing artist & I for one will always support her.

*the flash photography shit is very real for her - she's epileptic!!!

countless? good for you...that means you've missed the erratic behavior in years past. but ive been reading and hearing about her behavior since before bitter and experienced it myself during her pocketbook tour. she mumbled, never looked up and looked as if she were high as a kite the entire time.

but...thats life. i still have and still will go see her.

Well she used to come to Chicago a lot. My college even co-sponsored a Meshell Concert with Rahsaan Patterson as the opening act. That was INSANE - one of the best concert experiences I ever had. I also saw her when she toured behind Plantation Lullabies, Peace Beyond Passion (saw a couple of shows), saw her at a small gig at a bar I can't remember the name of, but she killed it. That was around Bitter, but she mixed stuff from the previous two albums in the set. I saw her at the HOB in Chicago before Cookie came out, but she did Dead Nigga Blvd. and the crowd went crazy. I saw her at a concert for the Black MBA association, now she was pissed at playing for that lame, snobby crowd. She gave them attitude, but it fit the situation perfectly she did Dead Nigga Blvd there too and meant every word of it, it was fantastic. My friends and I went just to see her, we were the only people there who even knew who she was. I talked to her that night and she was cool with me. I saw her one more time and she was good, the J Davies Trio or something like that opened for her. It was a kick ass show. Then after that I don't know what happened. That was the disappointing show at the Park West. Then she ventured into the Jamaa stuff.

Well when I saw her last year (her band was tight, btw), I thought she was rather pleasant towards me. I did ask for a pic of me and her, but she doesn't do that sort of thing. I don't know why. shrug

Thank U Sosgemini.

CalhounSq, I really didn't have any prob with her performing new music. NOt at all! smile Most of us are NOT complaining about that. We were disrespected and that ain't cool. She is my girl and she is "family." And when family does something not cool we call them out on it, we voice our hurt and then we hug and make up. LoL

I think folks are just trying to get over their hurt. And I know it seems strange that people would be hurt by this but I mean people really connect to music and musicians.

I'm done with it though. She's cool by me and it's all good. I can't say when I'd be willing to pay and see her again but I'll continue to support her musical efforts.

Q: I notice that in your tour programme, you request that no photographs to be taken. What is your concern about photographs?

A: There are a few factors behind this request. The first consideration is that even though cameras have evolved to the extent that one can take photos without flashes going off, not everyone knows how to do this. I can think of a couple of concerts so far on this tour where, after all the pains we have taken to create an intimate and dramatic beginning, with just myself and a harp and a couple of other musicians, the lights flashing from the audience were like a fireworks display. Not only did it interrupt the mood I was trying to set for the song, I received numerous complaints from other audience members that they too found it disruptive.

Historically, it has also been the case in some theatrical productions – depending on what they are – that flashes can disrupt the concentration of the performers and cause them to forget lines. Then, too, there can be safety issues. I have been advised that this is still the case, although it is less of a concern for me personally from a safety standpoint.

Then there is the slightly thornier issue of taking photos of someone where permission has not been sought, or where the subject has explicitly asked that his or her photo not be taken, sometimes for religious, privacy or other reasons.

Additionally, now that we have entered the digital world, where photos are no longer kept in check as a result of the limitations of their format (analogue rather than digital), it is a fact that photos that would in the past have been kept for a photographer’s private collection are now peddled for public consumption. This, finally, can lead to the “pursuit” of well-known people.

As most of you know by know, I do not support or encourage the cult of celebrity. I believe that these concerts are a special time for us to spend together, unencumbered by the distracting process of physically capturing the moment. Rather, they are a time to focus our minds and hearts on the unique and personal experience of what we are sharing. I would say that this applies towhen I am signing autographs as well. For a person who has a public dimension to her career, constantly being photographed without permission can lead into a world where people start feeling that they “own” you as a performer, and have “rights” to you, including taking your picture whenever they wish. The far end of this scale is ‘stalking’

That said, we have not wanted to get heavy-handed with people who attend the concert. We decided therefore to simply place a courteous request in the programme so that the audience would be acquainted with my wishes and there would be no confusion. I hope there will be respect for my request. ~ LM

Last time I saw her here in Amsterdam, during the 'Dance Of The Infedel'-tour, she was awesome..... She hardly spoke, didn't sing, but had the best band with her.....a band Prince could only dream of (and, yes, he also has some awesome muscians around him!). After the show (which blem me away), she & the band went to a bar and were playing the records the wanted.....it was a great party and she was in good spirit. I had a chance to talk to her & the band.....she seems like a nice person, but I'm sure you should not rub (no pun intended) her the wrong way!

Definitely! If I was @ that show I'd probably be pissed myself nod I'm just hoping she pulls it together for SF lol

But the chick who's calling her a man? Would she be so quick to say something like that if MeShell wasn't gay? To me that comment is more about MeShell's sexuality than the way she looks neutral

I must say, I saw her in August 2003, right before she released Comfort Woman, and it was a great experience, though a short and unfocused show. She took some people to Chuh-ch with a gospel-tinged rendition of "Fool Of Me." And she played "Love Song No. 1," which set the pace for the rest of the show.

A friend of mine caught her 2 years ago in NYC on the Spirit Music tour and talked as if it were an almost holy experience.

But I've heard it's really hit-or-miss with her.
