But there's also a bit of pleasure in being the modern age freaks we've become.
I don't think I'll ever hear these songs the same way again.

I don't have Black Cherry either But when I saw Onenitealone praising Supernature I immediately went out and bought it. Love that album to death!. And Lovely Head is one of those songs that freak me out. Not that I am scared of it but how I feel when I hear it, my skin and my body is holding me back from expressing truly what I feel about it. Not sure if that makes sense or not 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Okay, so there is a real nostalgic element to Goldfrapp dating back as far as the 1930's I'd say, but definitely covering musical idioms of 1950's sci fi soundtracks, 70's disco and 80's new wave. The use of her voice feels very old school, like Barbara Streisand. Her lyrical themes are decidedly early 20th century: fascism, technology, aliens, monsters, Cold War, brainwashing She presents a sado-masochistic relationship between humanity and technology, a mix of pleasure and alienation, an irony. Lovely Head It starts in my belly Then up to my heart Into my mouth I cant keep it shut Do you recognize the smell Is that how you tell Us apart I fool myself To sleep and dream Nobodys there No-one but me So cool Youre hardly there Why cant this be killing you Frankenstein would want your mind Your lovely head Your lovely head Is this a song about dismemberment, birth, sex? The formal elegance of the voice is nostalgic, but there is dis-ease with the crashing scrunched notes of the synthesizer. It's like a horse that can't run. And there's that wailing sound. Thank you for compelling me to think about this song in all three contexts 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

You know, I am absolutely amazed at how many people ignore lyrics. I am driven first and foremost by lyrics. Of course I love catchy tunes and music itself but it's always the lyrics I gravitate towards and what makes a song for me 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

I usually ignore lyrics because I'm too lazy to look them up. But that's where a lot of the meaning comes in. This process is helping ME too appreciate the songs so much more.

Goldfrapp, together with Bjork, are one of the few bigger thinkers of modern popular music!

I usually ignore lyrics because I'm too lazy to look them up. But that's where a lot of the meaning comes in. This process is helping ME too appreciate the songs so much more. I'm like that a lot, but then there are times when I actually do look up lyrics and kick myself for not doing so sooner. Goldfrapp's "Black Cherry" is an excellent example. I think it's just an old fashioned love song (possibly even a 21st century wedding song?), but I'll wait for your dissertation on that one before I say any more.

Strict Machine
I get high on a buzz Then a rush when I'm plugged in you I connect When I'm flush You get love when told what to do Wonderful electric Wonderful electric Wonderful electric Cover me in you I'm in love, I'm in love I'm in love with a strict machine I'm in love, I'm in love I'm in love with a strict machine When you send me a pulse Feel a wave of new love Through me I'm dressed in white noise You know just what I want So please Wonderful electric Wonderful electric Wonderful electric Cover me in you I'm in love, I'm in love I'm in love with a strict machine I'm in love, I'm in love I'm in love with a strict machine This is the most explicit song yet to describe a sado-masochistic love relationship with "the machine" -- which I have a feeling here is electronica, computers, amps, televisions, and representative of the artistic process...her references to "dressed in white noise" and "plugged into you" and "you know just what I want"... Back to Lovely Head: Frankenstein would want your mind... Here, it's as though the machine has her mind, and her body too. A disco song straight out of the 70's, the strict machine beats out whips and slaps, pulls zippers, and even grinds into penetration. I can see Allison laying naked on a turntable spinning around and around or riding a conveyor belt in an automated mechanical assembly line receiving whips and slaps from an orchestra of talented pleasure machines. The song accelerates at this point, building sexual energy, just when the synthesizer picks up the melody and sings in counterpoint to her melody (and whispers and grunts). The machine is a full expressive partner in this deal, as happy as she is. The song ends on a note of exaltation, with the ethereal proclamations of gospel-like choral singing. I guess we're in church now.

Seriously, if I start teaching high school (which I'm thinking of doing), I'm going to work this stuff into the curriculum. Maybe have the kids write essays about their favorite songs.
