New Jack Swing dominated the late 80s and from that point on,R&B began sounding like hip-hop.

More like shit hop. lol

In the early 80s,R&B still sounded like R&B.

And better yet, it was mostly dominated by funk. When funk dies, artists might as well call it quits because "If they don't make funk, they can keep their dull ass junk". lol

Damn, y'all are some real playa haters. There was some good stuff after 1984. You guys are just stuck in your favorite era of music.

Yeah, there was some good stuff after 1984,but come on....R&B in the early 80s was superior to the crap in the late 80s.Hell,the summer of '81 was R&B's high point in the 80s,imo.

Yeah there was but much less.

You guys are just stuck in your favorite era of music.

I moved on to house music in the late 1980s and early 1990s. When shit hop took over and every thing slowed down (tempo wise), I said "fuck it" to all new music. I grew up on fast ass shakin' jams and I refuse to go backwards to accepting music with the tempo of Lawrence Welk. Rappers try to pretend that they are tough thugs but that's only to disguise the fact that they are really a bunch of slow listening Waldo dorks. lol

shrug I wouldn't know since I wasn't born yet. But I came up during the late 80's and early 90's, so of course I'm gonna defend that era.

But that's how it is. Whatever generation in which you came up, you're gonna defend your music and say that those were the days.

I have "Daisy Lady" and that's not it. The jam I'm talking about is harder and more funky. I saw the episode guide on the "Soul Train" website and they performed a song called "The Tilt". I'm wondering if that's the song I'm thinking about.

Well, tell that to all the people in their 20s in the 1970s that were in the discos night after night. They would have been teenagers during the Motown era of the 1960s and were enjoying the hell out of the 1970s.

I first started bitching about music going downhill in 1985 and I was only 17. Why? Because it actually was going downhill. Age has nothing to do with it.

I'll tell you when things actually went downhill. When Shemar Moore was the host. I really tried to watch it and get into it, but the acts were so boring.

But I'll tell you what though: if I came up during the late 90's-millenium, I probably would've enjoyed the music. That would've been the soundtrack to my youth jsut as the music you guys liked from the 70's and early 80's was your soundtrack.

That's because there were no good acts to put on the show. At least Don Cornelius had the good sense to leave the show before it ruined his reputation.

You would have enjoyed the late 90s music because that would have been all you knew. Corporations were controlling the radio and video channels by then and they kept everything out that was a threat to the cheap stuff that was being made. If you notice, there were no style changes during these years (at least in R&B anyway). Shit hop dominated since the early 90s and still dominates to this day.

When I was growing up in the early 80s, there were no oldies R&B stations. The only oldies station I remember was maybe a 50s station. All the R&B from the 60s and 70s, was played every once in a while on stations that played current R&B and at certain times of the day. For instance, I never heard a song like "Soul Makossa" back when it was popular in the early 1970s. I heard it for the first time on the radio during the early 1980s.

There are some amazing episodes from the 70s!! I don't know why Don Cornelius is holding back. There's one episode from the early 70s featuring Sly and The Family Stone and they take over the whole show!! At one point,Sly even walks into the audience and dances with the dancers.

There's an early 70s episode with Stevie Wonder debuting his new single "Superstition" for the first time.At one point,he sits at his piano, surrounded by Don and the dancers. He comes up with a new song right there,on the spot....sorta like a tribute song about "Soul Train".

There's the David Bowie performance from 1976.And the Elton John performance from 1974.He performs "Bennie and The Jets".

Good thread, Alive. Of course, I agree. Vintage, classic footage of the greatest performers ever. The J5, Marvin, Stevie, Bootsy. The clothes, the dances, the afros,.... the freedom.
