Starts off with an average Rick James sounding drum beat similar to PIMP The Simp....then Rick James starts talkin jibberish in Espanol, followed by a sexy socialite returning the favor by sayin somethin back in the same forign language..

THEN

The horns produce excitement with the synth high and the bass guitar playing for the rest of the time throughout the jam.

I haven't forgotten that jam. It's decent but not one of my favorites. "17" is the track I like the most from that album.

The "Reflections" album is the one I play the least because the majority of it is a greatest hits album. Here's something I bet y'all didn't know. Apparently, "Reflections" is not what the album was originally going to be named. I had the 45 of "17" before the album came out and it had on it....."From the forthcoming album "Shower Of Hits". When the album came out about a month or two later, it was named "Reflections".

By the way paisleypark4, you've been away from the org for awhile. It's good to see you back and, judging by your avatar (which is your actual picture), you are looking just as cute, fine, handsome, and sexy as ever.

Interesting observation Motown has a long history of stuff like this....changing album titles at the last minute,cancelling albums altogether,etc.In late 1979,they released a new Marvin Gaye single called "Ego Trippin Out".Those who bought the 45 saw on the label that it was from his upcoming album 'Love Man'.Problem is,the album was cancelled.I bet there were alot of confused fans back then,wondering why the album never came out.

Man, somebody tell me the punk-funk horns were not getting all the way down on this track! Danny is soloing his ass off. One his top 5 solos, ever, IMO, just after "All Night Long." Classic, classic Rick James. The world has changed so much in 15 years...Jesus. But God almighty knows how grateful I am to have walked the Earth at the same time was Rick.

Speaking of 17, I remember the very first time I heard it on WBLS in New York. It was around June of 1983. Early summer. Frankie Crocker came on and said a few choice words about it just before dropping the needle...basically this is Rick's shit, I have absolutely no idea what he is singing about, so don't come suing ME for playing songs about underage sex. Take THAT shit up with Rick.
Or words to that effect. Hilarious. Man, I miss the old 'BLS. I miss that entire era of music so much.

Soul Alive is on point. When I 1st heard "17" and that wild guitar solo, I instantly thought "Purple Rain" and "Let's Go Crazy" (back in 84).

And Frankie Crocker was THE MAN on BLS back in the day.

Now,in the summer of '83,Rick was riding high with the song "Cold Blooded".I remember when our local R&B radio station premiered that song in June of that year.It was unlike anything he had ever done before.....very stripped down,synth-funk.That album was the beginning of the new Rick James sound.He still used horns on a few tracks,but synths played a more prominent role,resulting in a colder,electronic,New Wav-ish sound.Still funky though.

I remember buying the 45 before the album came out and then buying the album the first day it was released. I went wild when I heard "New York Town".
