Greenwood, Archer And Pine Dudes-The Gap Band Thread I don't recall seeing a thread on these three funky Wilson brothers from Oklahoma, so I thought I'd start a thread on them. These dudes used to come out on stage with their 10 gallon cowboy hats on with those white glittering outfits and those cowboys boots and cold turn an arena OUT!!!
The G.A.P in Gap Band stands for Greenwood Archer And Pine. The street names where the brothers grew up on. One can surely hear the Stevie Wonder influence in Charlie Wilson vocals but he took Stevie's style and augmented it and came up with his style in turn influencing Aaron Hall {lead singer of Guy}. The first 5 Gap Band records are highly recommended. But the sure classics are Gap Band III and Gap Band IV . You have to have those two records in your funk collection. I prefer Gap Band III first though. You can put that record on and it hits hard from beginning to end. Starting with "When I Look In Your Eyes" up though "Yearinng For Your Love" and the monster number #1 R&B smash "Burn Rubber (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)". Also "Nothing Comes To Sleepers" is beautiful too. Then you have other nice album tracks like "Sweet Caroline"{which is what I would term "country western funk"..just listen to the track and you'll see what I mean}. Then you have "Humpin" on this same great album. Gap Band III is one of the best r&b/funk album of the 80's. Gap Band IV is a great album too. More hard hitting midwest funk like "Early In The Morning" and my personal favorite track off the album "Outstanding". Charlie Wilson released a pretty good solo album not too long ago. These brothers funk hard that's for sure. | |
