Shakira's "Pies Descalzos" Album - appreciation thread 1996....The 3rd Shakira album is released!(after 2 not very successful ones). Wham! Bang! Shakira Explodes into the pop world! Pies Descalzos made Shakira a star in all of Latin America and most of the spanish speaking world. I remember portuguese radio putting Estoy Aqui in heavy rotation! I was 14 at the time!
Such a powerful album...great lyrics! Shakira tackles subjects like abortion and androgeny (Se Quiere...se mata), longing (Pienso en Ti) and love...not the tacky love songs like Underneath your clothes but stuff like Te Necesito... 
This album may not be Shakira's Masterpiece (the shaki-piece is Dónde Están los Ladrones? under the guidance of Emilio Estefan), but it's an essencial album to own! I love this album so much. I remember when it first came out I was working at a record store (remember those?) and this sparked my curiosity. I cracked it open played it and fell in love with 'Estoy Aqui'...the verses reminded me of Pretenders 'I'll Stand By You'....
But I gotta say DONDE ESTAN LOS LADRONES is her best album period. peace Every minute of last night is on my face today.... | |

There's some good songs on 'Pies Descalzos', but to me it's like listening to Prince's first two albums. She hadn't really found her signature sound yet. | |
