I also noticed a lot of popular music today playing on the radio don't have an instrumental break or section like a lot of the old school R&B songs have. Its just a repetitive catchy beat, some filler lyrics with a hook that is repeated over and over until the song finishes.

I hate the rap that is on an r&b song and all it talks about is the rapper's issues or how many records he sold. nothing in his lyrics about what the singer is singing about.

You really hit on something. There was a time when those rappers who ushered in mainstream success used to brag about their newfound wealth, which was fine, because folks know they paid dues. E.g., Biggie's "Juicy," a great rags-to-riches track by a cat who grew up in hip-hop. These days, we have cats who don't even give us any reason to appreciate their braggin' on what they have, because they have no skills and they're just providing background noise for beats.

And I co-sign most of what Blaque said. It's cheaper and more profitable to market hit-pop, so until the streets move on to something else, it will go on this way.

Lots of love on that response

U asked all the questions that I have been thinking! I'm a Musician & it has come 2 a point where I'm not sure if I even wanna get signed 2 a Record Label. Because the state of R & B is so horrible that I would never let these Record Execs talk me in2 making these Lil Jon sounding trax. confused

Bishop31,don't give up hope.I was talking about the major record companies like Sony,A&M,Virgin,MCA,etc.that want to sign new young r&b artist or groups to that kind of "crap" r&b music. There are lots of other record companies that appreciate the value of classic soul and classic funk music but they usually independent record labels(or "indie music labels").For example, there is this record label called "Soul Street Records" that specializes in only classic soul, deep funk, and blues. Also there is Stax Records in Memphis,Tenn. There are probably a lot more but I don't remember off the top of my head. So don't give up.Plus go online for some information as well.

Hey, Thanx 4 the Info., I have come 2 a crossroads as a Musician. I just don't wanna get signed 2 a Label that will make me a Puppet like so many other Artists. Its sad 2 see these young artists that act like they're doing it big..but then at the end of the day they barely got enough money 2 get an Apartment.

well I love beyonce, she's the shining light from all the r&b/hip hop artists today. Some may disagree with me, but the girl can saaang, she can dance and she works her behind off more than anyone in the music business at present

You are correct. She can sing, dance and she is a tireless worker. The problem
is the bullshit that she's singing that turns people off. If she did more quality songs like me,myself, and i and listen people may not criticize her for the crap she does like the song for the pink panther soundtrack, and the wack ass songs she has on b-day. I think the girl done loss her damn mine making all those crazy videos. I declare it seems like everyday i turn on the tv she has a new damn video.

If I hear about this Lloyd person one more time... I only know of him through the Org. I finally looked him up and damn if he doesn't look like a younger verssion of Flavor Flav. sad

lloyd looks like Flavor flav? eek

lol omgosh....

I do think this is another generational thing though....ya'll truly forget all of the fly by singers that came through the 80's and 90's and are no where to be found.

Lloyd is an average singer but is a good young man. This is what I keep hearing through comments from ppl who've met him or have interviewed him. Not a thug. Just a lame singer. shrug

and tonylover...metal did the same to women as well. So the question is why do MEN do this to women. smile

I was about to say the samething... Lloyd does not look anything like Flava

I wont pretend to know the answers to half these questions but I died laughing while at the Barber shop yesterday, they had BET on and a song came on by Lloyd called "Get it Shawty"

ROTFL!

I had to stop to think if my 7 yr old son had wrote that song

An interesting tidbit, Usher's younger brother James produced that track. Good soul and R&B music is still out there u just can't be lazy about finding it. You can't sit on ur ass and wait for Top 40 radio to play it or flick back and forth between BET VH1 and MTV. The channel VH1 soul has this programming called "SubSoul" thats where I can watch all my favorite acts.
I'm an org elitist... totally unapproachable.

I have some questions:

1.Why do so many R&B singers want 2 look like rappers? What happened 2 the days when being different was cool?

2.Why does 85% of current R&B HAVE to feature a guest rapper or have a rap remix?

3.What the fuck is up with all the sampling? Did Prince, Michael, Stevie, others take all the good melodies?

4.How in the blue hell did Pretty Ricky get popular?

5.What is up with parents letting their preteen kids listen to this crap so the cycle continues and the kids become fucked up(aka not knowing shit about music)

6.When these "songwriters" create a song, are they even thinking of writing a classic or an "at the moment" hit? It's to think of songs from the past 10 years that will make a lasting impression

7. Why is everybody "the next so and so"? Usher, Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown, Ne-Yo, Lloyd, and these other muthafuckers are "the next Michael Jackson" yet they probably won't last another decade(in the case of Lloyd and Chris Brown, another 4 or 5 years) somebody's always the next Prince, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye!

8.What happened to real instruments. I think it's cool to use Reason or Pro-Tools but never using the real thing?

9.Whatever happened to the R&B band???

I got a lot but these are some of the things I've been thinking about..... mad

I have to say, I was starting to feel like an "illegal allien" as Sting puts it, in Englishman in NY. 2 tell you the truth, it does my heart glad to hear this. It lets me know that Im not alone. One thing Ive come to realize iz that if everyone is so tired of whats musically going on "START A REVOLUTION" and STOP SUPPORTING THE MAINSTREAM!! support more Online radio stations and independent music, ect. Because, I've learned.....in order to change the world around U, u MUST first free yourself from it. STOP SUPPORTING.....
CORPROATE OWNED RADIO THAT PLAY THE SAME SONGS OVER AND OVER

MAJOR LABELS THAT DONT GIVE YOU A CHOICE AND CONTINUE TO FORCE FEED YOU THE SAME CRAP!

START SUPPORTING THE MOM AND POPS THAT MADE IT ALL HAPPEN TO BEGIN WITH

thats all for now : )

Exactly! Hell, fucking opera singers can sing their asses off too but I wouldn't be caught dead listening to that shit.

Beyonce makes the same shit that everyone else makes these days....stripped down midtempo shit with the weak shit hop drum machines. If she can't make some STRONG ass shakin' uptempo funk, then she needs to sit her dead ass down and get the hell out of the way of somebody that can. And that goes for everyone else current these days also. lol

I have some questions:

1.Why do so many R&B singers want 2 look like rappers? What happened 2 the days when being different was cool?

These new R&B cats are tryin to fit in, so lookin like rappers is thge next best thing. The ice, jewelerys and fitted hats.

2.Why does 85% of current R&B HAVE to feature a guest rapper or have a rap remix?

You could use the same answer as above. Tryin to fit in.

3.What the fuck is up with all the sampling? Did Prince, Michael, Stevie, others take all the good melodies?

Why make your own music when you can use a P-Funk or JB tune?

4.How in the blue hell did Pretty Ricky get popular?

Someone needed to take the place of B2K, right.

5.What is up with parents letting their preteen kids listen to this crap so the cycle continues and the kids become fucked up(aka not knowing shit about music)

Because most of the parents gre up on this type of music also, so the kids are just followinf suite.

6.When these "songwriters" create a song, are they even thinking of writing a classic or an "at the moment" hit? It's to think of songs from the past 10 years that will make a lasting impression

Songwriters are tryin to make the big buck now becuse they know if 5 years they won't be around.

Noone is original anymore.

8.What happened to real instruments. I think it's cool to use Reason or Pro-Tools but never using the real thing?

I was talking to my pops and he said he remembers when it was cool to play an instruemnt. Now, its considered corny or "not hard." You gotta be a rapper. Also, I think schools have a lot to do with it.

9.Whatever happened to the R&B band???

It got lost in the late 1980's and early 90's and we will probally never find it.

You are very welcome. That's the reason why they want a artist as young as 16 or 17 who don't know anything about the music business. It is the perfect opptunity for record companies to take control of these young people because they know that these artists want the fame and money. That's the reason why I feel that for anybody who wants to be a musician or singer, they have to know much about the industry as much as possible and know how to write music for themselves.
