as Prince fans, are you usually LESS impressed with artists who the general public deems "great"? every few months, some great act comes out that isupposed to be so awesome or groundbreaking, but i just never get impressed. i remember when everybody was on the Jill Scott bandwagon, sayimg she was soooo awesome and this and that. so when i paid good money to go see her in concert, i was like "dang--that's it?" she stood there and ad-libbed a 45 minute cd for 2 hours. not picking on her-- i like her--but i just can't seem to get a Prince-like rush at concerts i've been going to lately
anybody else have this happen?

Prince laid the ground rules for me as who I consider an artist. If they don't write the lyrics or the music, they aren't artist.
I very rarely buy or listen to people who are just singers. They are a dime a dozen to me, and I'd rather not waste my time. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

its a bit unfair to compare prince to alot of artist. if kinda silly. maybe it would be different if everyone wrote, produced, and played everything like he does.

Being a Prince fan has made me more discriminant in what I consider talent though. Singers that don't write lyrics or music had better have some mad vocal skills and stage presence to impress me. There are a lot of singers that are out today that the general public deems great based on their cd sales but when it comes to performing, they are seriously lacking and quite unimpressive.

I can still appreciate someone who is the instrument of someone else's artistry and doesn't do all their own everything.
But Prince--and a 1 or 2 others--have definitely made me view concerts differently. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

Yep. I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

i don't really listen to alot of new artists.... but what I have seen is that they might be great in a recording studio, where the music can be altered. But when they have a show- they suck. Alot of concerts these days is mostly dancers, the technology, and other stuff... and the music counts for very little of the show.
with a few exceptions- and i use "exception" lightly- its my opinion that the quality of music has decreased over the years. [Edited 4/17/07 7:55am] "So shall it be written, so shall it be sung..."

damn, sos and pfunkjazz, are your comments merely present tense? I hope so.
in any event, it's mainly a generational thing to me. those of us who grew up listening to Prince also grew up listening to Stevie/Sly/Jimi/Al/Chaka/the Stones/the Beatles/Steely Dan/Tina/Parliament/Dylan/Johnny Cash, depending on your background. Fans like me who love Prince were later exposed to other great artists of years past, like Miles, Monk, 'Trane, etc. Against that background, it's hard for me to accept contemporary artists who are deemed "great." My local paper ran a review of a Justin Timberlake concert that anointed him "this generation's answer to Michael Jackson and Prince." I like JT fine, but if that's true, that's an awfully weak answer. [Edited 4/17/07 8:51am] Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Uhh...yeah I'm asssuming "in recent years" is implied in the title of the thread, like say "since 2000" (don't ask why, it's just the year that popped in my head). test

My 1st concert experience was 3 feet away from Prince at Paisley Park--needless to say I quickly found out that Prince is the exeption rather than the norm when it comes to live performance/shows. Others pale in comparsion.

I'm not impressed with the majority of new acts that have come out in recent times. If I've taken anything away from being a Prince fan, then it's that I don't expect a 2nd coming of Prince, but bring something hot to the stage, especially if you had a good/great CD. I'm not looking for them to write their own stuff but I want to know that the person singing can truely sing. Just my 2 cents. [Edited 4/17/07 16:46pm] I'm not a fan of "old Prince". Yes! After seeing Prince in concert five times (which is not a lot compared to some P fanatics I know but whatevah)most concert's i've been to just pale in comparison. The last concert I went to was Kelly Clarkson and I was dragged there by some friends of mine because I really had no intention of ever going to see her in concert. Needless to say though it was nothing like seeing Prince in concert . I was bored for the most part and kept making several trips to the bathroom/snackbar to kill time.
