She more or less did.

i don't think her songs have the same theatricality as the classics they imitate, but i also don't think her songs are meant to be grandly theatrical. for some reason, "back to black" reminds me of a less folkie/more poppy version of carole king's "tapestry". shrug

There is nothing theatrical when she sings "you made me miss the Slick Rick gig".

I think the best thing about her is that she takes a relatively dead genre, that is really likeable to begin with (Motown and Blues), and slightly updates it with her own style. There is nothing necessarily "new" being offered. But because there is a fondness for the style to begin with, coupled by the fact that it's a seemingly "dead" genre, makes it a fresh offering amongst much that is out there today...most of which sounds the same. I think that her appeal is reaching the older generation that think fondly of "older genres".

I have to agree...in some of her songs you can hear Smokey Robinson and the Supremes without a doubt, I was surprised how quickly it is to catch on to that, Forgot which songs they are, but the sound was so obvious, so although she mixes her sound with (motown and blues) I really don't see anything new about her music, but I do like some of her songs and her sound. At times, though, she does sound like she is actually "whining" (no pun intended) and some of her songs can sound really depressing...just my 2 cents..

by the way should I know who the Zutons are? I wouldn't have even known it was a cover unless everyone mentioned this tidbit of information.

Pure indie pop, they're good fun but can't see them lasting. Still worth checking out though. twocents

I used to have their first album. They're a British band that had a big buzz about them a few years ago, but then people lost interest. On this side of the pond anyway.

Oh yeah, their first album just came out a few years ago. But their sound is very retro--like a late 60s psychedelic-ish thing.

Female Prince? I wouldn't say all that.
I might compare her to Rick James a little bit only because of the gritty/ghetto/doowop vibe of her music. She is tighter than uh.. than a er, tighter than something that is is really really tight.
She got that drunken type of soul swagger that'll make you respect a drunk, y'know?

"show me some gotdammmned ruhspect *hic*"
I am really starting to like her a lot.
Joss Stone can't empty that gal's chamber pot.Ugh, I have always detested Joss Stone and I regard her as a stone fraud. But Amy Winehouse is believeable than a mufuggah.
