Amy fucking Winehouse.

Why didn't I know about this person? She is so badass she makes Lily Allen look like Sanjaya. How great is she? On Okayplayer some dude called her the scaries white woman in the world, no shit...lol. Why did I sleep on her for this long and why aren't more people raving about her? She is big as fuck in jolly ole England. Looks like we are in for a new English invasion. No American is coming up with music this good. Weird english soul music is all I can call it. To hell with goofy Joss Stone. This British babe would kick her ass and have her crying to Timbaland..lol

Amy Winehouse, the female Prince? Yeaaaaa bitches.
All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

if the second coming has happened, at best amy is the donkey in the manger.

that said, i really love her album and i'm looking forward to seeing her perform in chicago this summer.

i just like the music - whatever kind of trainwrecky mess she may be or whatever, it comes second (or maybe even third or fourth) as far as i care.

Two months ago there were a million threads here about Amy Winehouse. You should have read some of them.

I findly took some of the Org's advise last week and found myself listening to both her albums non-stop last week. Winehouse got dat good shit! I think I enjoy "Frank" more than "Back to Black."

I avoided her for the longest time because all I kept hearing was a bunch of hype.

Until I actually HEARD the album.

Wow, I love Amy Winehouse.

I ordered a UK import that includes the album closer "Addicted".

Both albums are so good. I like B2B better though, because it goes even further into this old school direction and the drum sounds are way better than on Frank.
It's interesting that almost anyone I know agrees on her being amazing. On this site, my friends, everyone. Shows that people want interesting, deep music, IMO.

I don't get the hype, but I think there just must be something wrong with me, based on the universal love biggrin

My main problem is the melodies, they just don't grab me or whatever, but that's such a subjective thing.

I much prefer Lily Allen.

I dont doubt her talent i just doubt the ability to keep doing what she is doing. Not putting her down but i have seen this happen so many times before, I mean look at Fiona Apple. I can see Amy WHinehouse winning a Grammy now and saying something dumb and there being a backlash, and then she becomes this enigma where the hype outweighs the "product" which is exactly where Fiona Apple is now. As for the others like Lily Allen and Lady Sovreign and others, im not feeling them at all. For Amy i just hope she can avoid the pitfalls that are coming soon,

2 bad there's no way 2 search on the ORG, 'cause there were at least 2 strong threads on her.

She's an old soul. Great voice.

Like Dinah Washington meets Veronica from the Ronettes.

"Me & Mr Jones" is straight-up Dinah Washington.

Other favs are: "Tears Dry on Their Own" and the title track of course, "Back To Black".

It is going 2 be very challenging 4 her and Mark Ronson 2 top this album.

The only drag is the dumb-ass remix at the end, which isn't even that different from the original. It nearly ruins the album. I haven't heard "Addicted".

There is a very fine line between emulating and being. She is real, and not simply emulating. There's a fine line but a BIG difference.

There's nothing wrong with you. The melodies are weak by and large. Her first album was much better, although her affected vocal tone is annoying - I can't take listening to her for more than 40 minutes.

Hmm, I'll have to check that one out. I kind of want to like her, so if the songs are stronger on that one, maybe I'll like it a little more. I know what you mean about her tone, though...kinda phony baloney to me.

Well 2 each his reach, I guess...

I can barely listen 2 her 1st album.

Maybe U gotta dig Dinah Washington and the early '60s Girl Group sound in order 2 feel 'Back To Black'.

Believe me, I LOVE the girl group sound. But those songs were instantly hummable and enduring. When I hear the "Ain't No Mountain" buildup on Amy's album, I just get bummed when the melody doesn't go anywhere interesting.

i don't think her songs have the same theatricality as the classics they imitate, but i also don't think her songs are meant to be grandly theatrical. for some reason, "back to black" reminds me of a less folkie/more poppy version of carole king's "tapestry". shrug

Thus, with all of this praise, we have killed her. Goodbye, Edgy Bitch. You have achieved acceptance across the Globe. Good luck on your next project with Timbaland.

I think the best thing about her is that she takes a relatively dead genre, that is really likeable to begin with (Motown and Blues), and slightly updates it with her own style. There is nothing necessarily "new" being offered. But because there is a fondness for the style to begin with, coupled by the fact that it's a seemingly "dead" genre, makes it a fresh offering amongst much that is out there today...most of which sounds the same. I think that her appeal is reaching the older generation that think fondly of "older genres".
