Yeah, another thing is that technology can fail on you. If your Ipod gets damaged or the screen cracks on you, then you're screwed. That is unless you're wiling to shell out some money to get it repaired. I don't see how it's anymore convenient than the discman or the walkman was since an ipod can fuck up on you just as much as the others.

i went through 3 discmans the year before i got my ipod. i listen to music on headphones at work, and my job can be pretty labor intensive and the music equipment in my pocket or clipped to my belt is sometimes the last consideration in whatever action i'm undertaking, so they had a tendency to get fucked up quick. i'm still on my first ipod over a year later, so. shrug

I don't have one either for the same reason I never wanted a Walkman back in the day. I want my music to not only shake ass, but the fucking walls also. If the equipment doesn't disturb the neighbors, it ain't worth having. You sure as hell can't have a party with an ipod. What are you going to do, have all your guests gather around the headphones? lol

so i take it you don't even own a pair of headphones for your stereo?

I have worn several sets of headphones out.....cueing a song on my mixer while another song is pounding from my speakers.

and never wanted to listen to music when you were, say, mowing the lawn

Oh honey, Andy does not mow lawns....ever! lol

or some other activity?

That's what a portable boom box is for. I'm about ass shakin' and partyin' all the way around 100%. Andy doesn't just sit around and listen to music because it's "beautiful" music. lol I like to "feel" the music. I like to feel the vibrations of the beat and bass on the floor and through the walls. That just accelerates the desire for my ass to wanna move before my mind has a chance to think about it. Headphones ain't gonna do that for somebody like me.
Andy is a four letter word.

lol yeah they do look bigger & bulkier
well I really don't know
anyone who owns a ZUNE either
to know if they have problems or not

BUT... another thing with the iPod
I feel I shouldn't have to install a software
just to upload music to it...

I used to have that Creative ZEN thing
somebody just posted a picture of
and all you do is basically plug & play
click & drag

no software needed...
the iPod is just too much of a hastle for me
I hate having to install software
that I'm only gonna use ever so often
I'm more prone to the Windows Media Player anyway

You should try iTunes (go to an Apple Store, CompUSA, Best Buy, or somewhere). I have a feeling you'd prefer it to WMP.

And seriously, iTunes can do click and drag, but automatic syncing is even easier. You can just sync certain playlists and quickly switch out what goes on the iPod.

Y'all mf's got more excuses lol How about this - the software for ITunes is super easy to install & run. AND if your mp3 player craps out you've still got all your music saved to ITunes so all your shit is backed up automatically. smile

But go on y'all - make cd's, carry cassettes, all that shit bananadance

Sorry, but compressed music will never do it for me. I'd rather be the person dropping CD's on the floor as mentioned earlier.
As it is I'm pissed that I mostly rely on my PC to listen to stuff when I'm at home these days...nice convienence but I don't want to live there.

I'm sorry, but that's a bit over my head- I really don't even know that much about them or what a AIFF or Apple Lossless Encoded file is. However, don't most use them for compressed music? And will/can music ever sound as good thru an ipod as over a good quality component system from an original CD? just asking- not being argumentative.

Yes, most people use them for compressed music, but they also handle uncompressed files. iPods sound great -- particularly with high-quality headphones -- but they're never going to replace a high-quality stereo system. Of course, that's not the purpose, because that kind of stereo system isn't portable. If you want to listen to portable music, the iPod is the best option available.

Anx

i don't have an iPod, though i do have a creative labs zen nomad and i love it to pieces even if it looks all clunky and old skool like something i bought in 1983. lol

i bought my mom a pink iPod nano for christmas and i put a bunch of music on it for her and used it as an opportunity to see if i wanted an iPod for myself. it was fun to play with, but i think my zen nomad is more versatile, and from horror stories i've heard from iPod owners, my zen is more dependable. smile

Everyone is such a fucking purist, right? lol No one's saying, "throw away your stereo's & cd's people!" ANY mp3 player is just another option to listen to the music you love. I love the "jukebox" aspect of it, a song popping up that I didn't even know I wanted to hear. It's just a great gadget to have - not as great as Tivo, but still great razz

I got my iPod almost 2 years ago and I love it. I have the majority of my CD collection in there. I still buy CD's. I just put my songs from the CD on to the iPod. I just recently discovered the joy of Shuffle. Man, it's like I've fallen in love with my iPod again. It's so cool to hear a song you haven't heard in years and I feel like I have my own radio station in there. The only thing I don't like is the battery. It's like it dies so much quicker than it should. I still love it though. I need to upgrade to the current generation. That's one of my goals for this year.

I really never thought of owning an iPod as being that big of a deal. While I usually don't conform with the masses, there are occasions when something just works.

Maybe it's because I have a Mac(?) but I clicked one button to install iTunes. Four years and no problem so far.

I still have a stereo and buy vinyl and CDs. But when I'm traveling, especially by plane, I love having Sade, Incubus, Prince or even Stephen King just a click away. If I had a PC I'd probably try a Zen although I was infatuated with an iRiver for awhile.

I never bought an iPod. I say as long as you are happy with your cassette Walkman then more power to ya, NWF!

All of my walkmans for cassette long since stopped working last decade.

I've been getting by on my Discman:

But recently it started spinning very LOUDLY... sounded like it was rewinding a damn cassette, even with brand new batteries.

Well yesterday, I had a CD playing... and the spinning got quieter and quieter, until it finally stopped spinning.

The display was stuck on " 02 --:-- " as if it was trying to find its place in the song.

But it had finally stopped spinning altogether.

As a musician, having access to an MP3 player has been one of the best technological advances experienced in my entire life. For those of you who are ostensibly taking great pride in not owning an MP3 player, give me your microwaves, your cd players, your automobiles and all your other technological advances.
