Vinyl dig

Did anyone go on a vinyl dig lately? I recently found these albums:

***Cameo 'Alligator Woman' (1982)---this album is discussed here frequently and for many years,I've been looking for a good vinyl copy. Finally I have one.

***Lipps Inc. 'Mouth To Mouth' (1980)---I had this album back in the day.Glad I found it again! Contains the massive hit "Funkytown" but I prefer the disco jams "All Night Dancin" and the explosive "Rock It".

***Phyllis Hyman 'Goddess Of Love' (1983)---Her 1983 album features the uptempo dance hit "Riding The Tiger".Also includes the superb ballad "Falling Star",one of my favorite songs by her.

***Teena Marie 'Lady T' (1980)---contains the funk jam "Behind The Groove",which is arguably her best uptempo single.

***Kano (1980)---Old Schoolers will remember their 1980 club hit "I'm Ready" headbang They specialize in synth-heavy electronic disco.I had never heard their album before so this is a real treat for me.The song "Ahjia" is hot!

***Carl Carlton 'Everlasting Love' (1974)---have we ever had a thread devoted to the song "Everlasting Love"? That's one of my childhood favorites. It's cool to finally have the entire album.

***Minnie Riperton 'Minnie' (1979)---One of my all-time favorite vocalists.I won't rest until I find all of her albums! This album contains the hit "Memory Lane" music amazing voice!

***Minnie Riperton 'Love Lives Forever' (1980)---As we all know,Minnie passed away on July 12,1979 neutral This is the album she was working on before her death. It was released in 1980.Many guest artists were brought in,making this album a grand tribute to one of R&B's most amazing voices.Peabo Bryson,Michael Jackson,Roberta Flack,Patrice Rushen and others appear.

***Andre Cymone 'Survivin In The 80s' (1983)---Although Andre never really became a superstar, his albums are decent. This one features the funky "Make Me Wanna Dance" and the cool New Wave jam "What Are We Doing Here".Those two singles should have established him as a star in his own right.

***Rose Royce 'Golden Touch' (1980)---In the 80s,Rose Royce was all but forgotten but they continued to make good music. The opening track "And You Wish For Yesterday" is reminscent of the wistful "Wishing On A Star".The gentle title track became a minor hit.

***Slave 'The Hardness Of The World' (1977)---I think this is Slave's second album? Contains "The Party Song".

***Slave 'New Plateau' (1984)---This album has a bad reputation.Doesn't seem to get alot of love.I haven't listened to it yet but I guess by 1984,Slave was no longer the amazing force that they were just a few years earlier.Plus,Steve Arrington was gone.

***Central Line "Walking On Sunshine" 12" (1981)---LOVE THIS SONG!!!! The Larry LeVan special mix takes this song to new heights.A cool,synth-heavy piece of sophisticated funk. This is the type of jam you'd expect from a band like GQ,Heatwave or The Brothers Johnson.

***Val Young "If You Should Ever Be Lonely" 12" (1985)---A Rick James protege. Not so long ago,I did a thread on her. She's a very underrated vocalist and she came out with a good debut album. This song became something of an underground R&B hit.

I mean, doesn't static and clicks kill you dead.

I have a weak heart and can't stand clicks. I don't remember those nasty sounds in the late 70s and early 80s , but by the end of the 80s all my albums started sounding like that and I had to upgrade to CD.

I don't know if they changed the quality of the vinyl or that static had always been there and I just didn't pay attention shrug

I haven't played my vinyls in 25 years + .

I once had a CD to MP3 ripper software, that had an option to add static and click sounds to the songs.

from your message I'm guessing, that you don't want me to dig this out for you smile
Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

No, thank you. smile But really, is there a way to get rid of that static. I gave away most of my vinyls but I still have one or two hundred and I'd like to play them sometime.
As I said it started happening to me with NEW vinyls around 86-88. Christmas 88 I got my first CD player ans stopped buying/playing vinyls completely smile

then it seems more like a problem with the record player and/or needle and not with the vinyl itself

It's a good song but overall,I don't think this is one of her strongest albums.Alot of filler here ("You're All The Boogie I Need" is horrendous).

But I love "Alladin's Lamp" music

a second hand store is closing it's doors and has 50% off in his last week. so I got a couple of used CDs the other day. but one vinyl only, The Family album for 3 Euro. not really necessary, but it has more pictures in the inner side of the gatefold than the CD has smile

No,I don't think 'Mouth To Mouth' was ever released on CD.Such a shame, because it's a great album.Funny that it became a hit in the summer of 1980,a time when most people were saying that disco was dead, lol. That album is pure disco.

Great album. I've had it since it was popular.

***Lipps Inc. 'Mouth To Mouth' (1980)---I had this album back in the day.Glad I found it again! Contains the massive hit "Funkytown" but I prefer the disco jams "All Night Dancin" and the explosive "Rock It".

Only four tracks but great from start to finish. If a four track album were released today, that would be considered a maxi single. lol

***Teena Marie 'Lady T' (1980)---contains the funk jam "Behind The Groove",which is arguably her best uptempo single.

I've had that one since it was popular. That was my very first Teena Marie album. I also like "You're All The Boogie I Need".

***Kano (1980)---Old Schoolers will remember their 1980 club hit "I'm Ready" headbang They specialize in synth-heavy electronic disco.I had never heard their album before so this is a real treat for me.The song "Ahjia" is hot!

Now I could beat your ass because I could slap myself for not buying that album when it was popular. I used to pick it up every time I was in the record store back then but would end up putting it back and buying something else because I didn't know how the rest of the album would sound besides the song "I'm Ready". It wasn't until the 2000s that someone burned me a CD copy of the 12 Inch of "I'm Ready".

Isn't the album only about four tracks and has a drawn picture of a man and woman dancing on the cover?

***Andre Cymone 'Survivin In The 80s' (1983)---Although Andre never really became a superstar, his albums are decent. This one features the funky "Make Me Wanna Dance" and the cool New Wave jam "What Are We Doing Here".Those two singles should have established him as a star in his own right.

Now I'm really going to kick your ass! lol That's another one I could slap myself for not buying back when it was popular. I saw it in the record store back then but was afraid to buy it because the radio wasn't playing any of the songs from it. It's the only Andre Cymone album I don't have. I do have a burned CD copy of the song "Make Me Wanna Dance"....which skips throughout the song. lol

That's a great jam. I've got it on a compilation called "12 Inch Funk".

I have basically no static in my albums that I bought in the 1980s when they were brand new. I kept good care of my albums and kept them all in, not only the album covers, but the inside sleeves as well. A lot of people didn't keep those inside covers and would put the pictures on their walls as posters. I kept all mine inside the covers.

I don't have any of the covers to my 45s and they have static though. It doesn't bother me though. It just reminds me that they are "authentic" and not copies from a later era. lol

btw, i wonder what happened to the planned re-release of "Lady T" hmmm

I think that was released before the planned re-issues, but i`m not sure...

The expanded version of "It must be magic" contains two live tracks, right?
I allready have the original album, but i`m thinking of getting the expanded edition if the two bonus tracks are worth it.

Great Thread SoulAlive

I go on Vinyl Dig's at least twice a month, we have a few good Vinly shops here in Philly, here's what I picked up last Tuesday:

Heatwave 'Hot Property"(1979) - Eyeballin is the jam and Raise A Blaze is great album cut funk

Ramsey Lewis "Don't It Fell Good"(1975) - Spiderman is my song off this one.

Bobby Thurston - "You Got What It Takes"(1980) - I only picked this up because it was a Prelude Records single and I love this song. It's a hidden funk gem

Mass Production 'Three Miles High"(1978) - I already owned a scratched up copy of this so when I saw a clean copy of this I picked it up. This is Mass Production's best album with jams like, "Sky High" Grove Me" "I Just Wanna Make A Dream Come True" Scarey Love" and the slow Banger's "Slow Bump" "I Don't Wanna Know" Even Mass's record company has slept on this album, not putting one of those songs on Mass's greatest hits.

Shock "Shock Waves"(1982) - "The Crack Is Back" Electrophonic Phfunk" are tight jams but "That's A Lady" is the highlight on this album IMO

Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde "The Challenge"(1982) - The rap answer to Vanity 6's "Nasty Girl", classic ealry 80's Hip Hop

Archie Bell "Anytime Is Right"(1981) - Archie's producer borrows musically from MJ'S "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" on this one and Archie's vocals are on point also

The Treacherous Three "At The Party"(1980) - Old school hip hop at it's best, I know this one had to be bangin at the club's back then.

***The Kano album has six tracks. The first song is "It's A War" which was released as a single."I'm Ready" is the last track.A very good album that I know you would like.

***As for Andre Cymone....in my area, the song "Make Me Wanna Dance" got a little airplay in the summer of '83.I never heard the second single "What Are We Doing Here".I guess that one was too New Wave for R&B radio, lol. Both songs are great.I really thought those songs would make Andre a star.

***Central Line "Walking Into Sunshine"...yeah,I got the 12" Funk collection CD you mentioned lol Love that song!! I especially like the synths.Very cool track!!

eek I've been looking for this album forever!! I've always wondered what their third album sounds like.Give me a review,is it as good as the first two albums? The only song I'm familiar with is "Eyeballin",which is GREAT! That song deserved to be a big hit like "Boogie Nights" or "The Groove Line".
