I was a little disappointed in the Bootsy video. I thought I was going to see some thumping and plucking! Instead, it was a lead solo!
I've never been fond of effect sounds on a bass guitar! How bout picking up a guitar instead of soloing on an instrument that has long been used for rhythm and time keeping? Intelligent people talk about ideas. -->Average people talk about things. --> Small people talk about other people. | |

I've never been fond of effect sounds on a bass guitar! How bout picking up a guitar instead of soloing on an instrument that has long been used for rhythm and time keeping? well to me, that's what makes it interesting. If Hendrix can use amplification and effects to make the ordinary guitar a sonic tool, why can't Bootsy do it on a bass? Keeping in mind what Hendrix, and to a slightly lesser extent Beck, Townshend before him, were starting to do with the electric guitar in the 60s was considered an inappropriate use for it by some. I think the kinds of sounds that Bootsy (and also Jaco, and Michael Manring and Cliff Burton in the videos I posted) evoke from the bass using distortion, octave pedals, samplers, reverb, etc. are pretty cool. I especially like the extremely moist, almost farting sounds that bootsy gets using envelope filters. Using an instrument in a way that deviates from its traditional role is often how great players define themselves. For a converse example, some of my favorite acoustic guitarists are Michael Hedges and Kaki King, who often play the instrument highly rhythmically with extensive use of slapping and popping, which is supposed to be a "bass thang" if you will.
