I don't think he's full of himself either from some of the things I've read. He's paid his dues. He thanks people for saying he sounds like Maxwell, but he doesn't like being compared to Justin (a pop singer). He would rather be compared to Marvin (a soulful singer) and we know that JT will NEVER be compared to Marvin. Robin also acknowledges that Justin is a 'consumate' entertainer, which is more than I would say. Robin's not trying to copy anyone in particular, but he does channel Prince, MJ, Curtis Mayfield, Maxwell, and D'Angelo in his music and even Desi Arnaz lol. Take him or leave him at least he has our attention and his music is refreshing. I miss Maxwell too.

I'm underwhelmed by him. What's unique about his music? He's not really bringing anything unique to the table. The little salsa flair? Heard it before. He's not really better than any other R&B singer. Some people give him "white boy points" but I don't. He's kinda boring. He does have some skills and I'm certainly not trying to knock his abilities but his material isn't all that by any stretch. He damn sure is no Marvin. If he were fat and black, nobody would pay any attention to him. Yeah, I'm saying it. His looks are coasting him into popdom. Y'all can have his corny ass. Holla back at me when he does something interesting.

He doesn't sound like Marvin, but "Would That Make U Love Me" has a very strong Marvin vibe.

Which says what? Somebody was trying to copy somebody. It wasn't Marvin. I'm not hating on him; just making a point.

shrug It could just be that Marvin is a big influence. This is the same nit people pick with Lenny Kravitz. "Inspired by" vs. "copied" is in the eye of the beholder.

He definitely sounds different singing live. I like his music, but was disappointed when I saw him sing live on television about 3 months ago;just didn't sound the same as when you listen to his tracks.

Did any body catch Robin Thicke on Oprah today. That dude is on fire and his wife is gorgeous and sweet as a candy cane!!! I love his CD and I am a little more than happy for him and his 'overnight' success. His music reminds me of the good that music can do the same way Prince's music has. This dude's the real deal! No matter what color he is, he's gonna be around for a long time.

Remember Remy Shand? White dude on Motown around '03 '04? Sounds JUST like Him

Dude's a little full of himself. He said in an interview people compare him to Justin Timberlake and Marvin Gaye but don't compare Justin to Marvin. I have NEVER heard that comparison. Maybe Marlee Matlin made it? shrug He sounds nothing like Marvin. Lost Without You is on his upper end of songs to listen to. If that don't sell you, i don't think he has much more to offer.

Word.

...and "Lost Without You" just sounds like watered down Maxwell 2 me. I'm surprised no one has felt the same there.

He's just not doing anything 4 me.

He ain't bad, just not that great.

Maxwell can blow this kid outta the water.

I agree with your entire post.

Co-sign. I don't get the hype about him or his music at all. I'm not even a Maxwell fan and I know Maxwell would crush this guy singing live.

I don't think anyone is truly "unique" in R&B these days. Most of these guys are just trying to do what Stevie Wonder,Marvin Gaye,Al Green and others have already done. But I like Robin. He seems to have a genuine understanding of real soul music.I stopped looking for uniqueness in today's music. These days,I just settle for good music, and Robin delivers.

Touche and this interview is brief but shows him and his wife together. I jst admire what he's done and how he's done it. I support good music no matter who they may copy or channel. I miss D'Angelo, Lauryn Hill, and Alicia Keyes too...
