Paul McCartney's mew album 'Memory Almost Full', will be out on the Hear Music Label on June 5, and according to reports, is expected to include a 15 minutes suite in the vein of the one on the Beatles 'Abbey Road', called 'Pictures In Song Suite'.

What appears to be the tracklisting to Paul McCartney's new album, Memory Almost Full, has appeared on the website starbucksgossip.typepad.com. The unconfirmed information features the titles to the album's 12 tracks and a thumbnail description of the songs. The album is McCartney's first for the Starbucks/Concord Music Group's offshoot label Hear Music.

Interestingly, both McCartney's late wife Linda McCartney and Beatles bandmate John Lennon feature in the song titles. The reported opening track, titled "To Be Said," is from a 2001 poem McCartney published about Linda in his poetry book Blackbird Singing. "Pizza And Fairy Tales" was what Lennon accused McCartney of being during a mid-'70s phone argument. According to McCartney, Lennon once spat out at him that, "You're only pizza and fairytales." Since Lennon's death, McCartney has gone on record numerous times saying that it would make a great album title.

The Starbucks Gossip post reads in part:

"To Be Said" - Based on the poem. A short string quartet piece. Delicate.

"Bring The Dawn" - Huge production number, mellotrons to brass, booming drums.

"Memory Almost Full" - Nice pop song (see "Driving Rain"), likely (the)first single. Some electronica.

"Love Hear My Thunder" - (Rolling) Stones-like rocker. (Sounds like) peak Wings.

"Robber Of Soul" - Funky jazz/brass number, unlike anything in (McCartney's) catalog so far.

"Cracks In The Earth" - Electric piano ballad, sounds like a Chaos And Creation In The Backyard track.

"Buy The Farm" - Solid rocker, Steve Miller-ish.

"It Happens Every Time" - Tight rocker, best song here.

"Silent Water" - Piano/organ/electronica song -- nice lyrics.

"God Damn Rock 'n Roll" - Sounds like a Back To The Egg outtake- almost punk.

"Pizza And Fairytales" - Most Beatle-esque. Reminds (me) of (McCartney's unreleased 1987 song) "Return To Pepperland."

"Pictures In Song Suite" - Almost 15 minutes. A true song suite, divided into four movements. Most people won't get how good this is.

The McCartney fansite macca-central.com reported that the domain memoryalmostfull.com was purchased by Concord Music Group on March 13th, and it's a safe bet that that will be the home page for the upcoming album. McCartney's Memory Almost Full will be released on June 5th

As to the supposed tracklist, it's probably best to wait for firm info on that one, but if true, it looks like interesting stuff. I was thinking cynically, 'Hmm, a bit soon after 'Chaos and Creation' for a new album (that came out around 10/05), maybe Paul's been having fun with his touring band in teh studio and just putting out something a bit thin with a few 'Chaos' outtakes', but it looks like it might be better than that.

I was so sure he'd sing "Now I'm 64"

Anyway, a new Macca roc album is always good news to me

I can't wait to hear this! He's my favorite song writer. I really enjoyed Chaos, and I'm sure this one will be great as well. I love how his music reflects the experiences of his life (He certainly has a lot to write about now). I am very eager to hear the instrumentals.

actually someone reported hearing the album as a whole.. and although i cant confirm its a 100% sure, it does actually check out from what we know about the songs, and the new single lyrics.

1-Dance Tonight- Short album opener. Instrumentation includes ukelele (some similarities to Harrison's "Any Road"), kick drum (lockstep, martial beat) and whistling. Similar to "We're Open Tonight" in sentiment, the lyric is a trifle but track is brief/fun enough.

2-Ever Present PastMusically quirky (McCartney II fans will love this one), hooky and clever with great lyrics, addictive robotic rhythm, nifty distorted guitar riffs and terrific double-tracked vocals. Fully realized top-drawer Macca Pop in every respect. Opening line: "I've got too much on my plate - I've got no time to be a decent lover". A+


3-See Your SunshineCreative, commercial pop love song with wonderful bass playing. Echoes of Linda in the background vocal department (as on "Run Devil Run", the vocal ghost of Linda shows up repeatedly throughout the album, as least to my ears). Middle section features a neat tempo change and fastly sung lyric. Romantic. Accapella ending.


4-Only Mama KnowsOrgasmically great Power Pop! Back To The Egg-esque energy! Great vocal! Junior's Farm-esque gutbucket feel, quirky lyric, lots of Linda/Denny/Wings guitar energy. My early favorite, rocks like a bitch!


5-You Tell Me - Stunning, heartfelt, bittersweet non-silly, post-love song, Acoustic based with great confessional lyric (ala "Dear Friend") and astounding, emotional vocal. Very Wings - echoes of Denny and Linda abound. "When was that summer of a dozen words" (let the Heather/divorce lyric hunting begin).

6-Mister BellamyI can't believe how great this track is; the odd, glorious musical structure and chord changes will surprise you at every turn. An A Cappella breakdown to die for. VERY early 10CC (think "Sheet Music"), with goofy vocal interjections (if you are familiar with 10CC's "The Worst Band in The World" you're halfway there).


7-GratitudePop/gospel w/shouty, "Oh, Darling" vocal. Nice tune and interesting arrangement but overemoting vocal ruins it for me. Possible grower.


8-Vintage Clothesnot positive but I think this is the first track of the album-ending Medley, ala RRSpeedway/ARoad. Lyrically a modern-day "Dedicated Follower of Fashion"-a tongue in cheek (I think) sendup/lampooning of modern clothing/fashion trends. Possibly inspired by daughter/clothing designer Stella? Strong lyric, ultrahooky tune and great arrangement, w/Beatlesque swirly backwards mellotrons and highly compressed tack piano (the opening piano riff is almost identical to Fleetwood Mac's "Say You Love Me"). Perfect pop.

9-That Was MeBackwards drum loop, rockabilly guitar riffs on acoustic, with great dissonant piano stabs, ala "I Want To Tell You". Autobiographical lyric speaks of/chronicles events in Paul's childhood, The Cavern Club, success...


10-Feet In The Cloudsop track, features Brian Wilsonesque vocal breakdown section (with vocodor!) and another strong autobiographical lyric.



11-House Of Waxmoody, forboding, cinematic - think a darker "Beware My Love". Great lyric/arrangement, unexpected chord changes from heaven, screaming guitar solos and one of Paul's best vocals ever.


12-End Of The Endtouching, confessional album closer, unlike anything that Paul has recorded. The lyric speaks to how he would like to be remembered/celebrated after he's gone. A heavy lyric tempered by upbeat, song-closing whistling coda (echoing whistling on opening track).


13-hidden track...Silly, brief album closer, ala "Boil Crisis". Probably (hopefully) a bonus/hidden track. Musically similar to the also-hidden instrumental track that closes Chaos (sounds like the same session).

Damn! That first tracklist was a fake?! I don't like to mislead people, so apologies all round for that first tracklist, which was posted in all good faith.

As to the 'new' tracklist, while it sounds pretty good and interesting, I need to slightly fall out of love with the fake one first, I think . That sounded almost too good to be true, with its electronica etc.

I wish that McCartney would decide to use his whole musical pallette (ie, electronica like his great if obscure 1998 'Fireman - Rushes' ambient electronica album, with Youth from Killing Joke, as well as the rock n' roll, ballads and classical elements, as he did on 'Chaos') on a proper solo 'rock' album. He is after all one of the fathers of rock electronica with his tape loops for the Beatles 'Tomorrow Never Knows'.

But I'll judge this new one on its own merits anyway, as 'Chaos and Creation' was imo a real return to form for Macca, so this one should be worth picking up.

The new anniversary edition of Rolling Stone has new interviews with Paul and Ringo.. There's also a Bob Dylan interview, during which he had this to say about Macca:

"...Lennon, to this day, it's hard to find a better singer than Lennon was, or than McCartney was and still is. I'm in awe of McCartney. He's about the only one that I am in awe of. He can do it all. And he's never let up. He's got the gift for melody, he's got the rhythm, he can play any instrument. He can scream and shout as good as anybody, and he can sing a ballad as good as anybody. And his melodies are effortless, that's what you have to be in awe of.... He's just so damn effortless. I just wish he'd quit (laughs). Everything that comes out of his mouth is just framed in melody."

Damn,..I liked the first tracklist better. Cool titles. Oh well.

Overall, a more balanced album than "Chaos and Creation", but missing the Beatle-esque style tune of "Friends to Go". Hard to describe, but it's like "Ram" meets "Back to the Egg". Which is VERY, very good in my book.

"Chaos and Creation" sounds more like a "coffee shop record" to me... can't imagine Starbucks blasting "Only Mama Knows".

This album is pretty deep - he's all over the place. Fun rockers, songs that almost completely reflect his past, with some excellent "Magnesium and Titanium Man" meets "Uncle Albert"-type stylings. I can't imagine this review is helping much to create the feel of the record in your head...

Bottom line: A great album that will please the McCartney fan more than a newbie... but that's okay. He's 64 and kicking everyone else's butt - a shockingly solid album for a guy who usually follows up a critically-praised album like "Flaming Pie" with the dreaded, "Driving Rain". Kahne must have gotten a good talking-to to get the producing job again - and he doesn't disappoint!

Track Listing:

1. Dance Tonight - A "Ram"-like opening. Fun little ditty - love it actually, a real treat. Like a "Hello" version of his song, "Goodbye". A simple song played on ukelele - sounds odd when you first put on the album, but it thankfully changes direction. A light toe-tapper, but then it kicks into...

2. Ever Present Past - Great rocker. Kicks butt. My favorite McCartney single in YEARS. Most have heard this one already. Driving verses and goes into a catchy and simple Macca-esque chorus.

3. See Your Sunshine - Thought the song was called, "So Fine" - it repeats many times. Well-produced, with a bit of "So Bad" in it... not the best, but still good. Great bridge in this.

4. Only Mama Knows - Total "Back to the Egg" McCartney. Rocks harder than anything since. Catchy melody, too. I love it. Starts with a unique and rather ominous classical-type string arrangement before kicking into the hard-driving rocker it is.

5. You Tell Me - Intense ballad. Maybe I should hold off on my review because I can't play the music right now. I haven't memorized lyrics yet. Would fit on "Chaos" perfectly.

6. Mr. Bellamy - Excellent song! SO odd and different. Wild little piano piece that changes style many times over his singing. Closest thing I can associate with it is one of his songs for animation. He does a few voices but it's SO well written. The closest thing he's ever come to do something like this is, "Return to Pepperland". This SMOKES "Pepperland" but it's the only way to describe it... I think it's about his cat. That's my guess! About "someone" who won't "come down" from somewhere because it will interfere with their "plans". I love this track.

7. Gratitude - Ugh. A bit of a show stopper, the weakest song on the album (though still okay) - he sounds like he's singing through his dentures. One of his attempts at "Souvenir" or "Call Me Back Again" though it doesn't work so well. He starts the song with singing "Gratitude... gratitude..." which is a bit amelodic. Again, doesn't do much for me. The melody is better than the execution... I wish he dropped the whole "Gratitude" part. You can really hear his spittle rumbling behind his teeth. "Grat(spittle)it(spittle)yuuude".

8. Vintage Clothes - Another excellent song. "What we are is what we are and what we are vintage clothes" he sings. It's modern but turns Beatle-esque in certain parts. A bit tongue in cheek - not too corny, though. It's cool.

9. That Was Me - Acoustic driven song about things he's done. Like "Summer of '59" (a b-side from "Chaos") - very similar actually. Just a few chords. I like it though.

10. Feet In The Clouds - Another lighter song in an acoustic vein...

11. House Of Wax - I'm blanking on this one but it's a rather intense ballad like "You Tell Me".

12. End Of The End - Wow. Killer. The melody didn't hook me at first, but now it does. It's raw (Paul whistles!) both production-wise (piano with scant strings) and lyrically. It could have been corny and awful, but he anticipates his death not with the more obvious, "I hope when I die, peace prevails" but rather about how he's going to a better place and he hopes jokes are told and stories are relayed fondly now that he's gone...

13. Nod Your Head (hidden track) - Hard guitars don't help this much - basic melody. If you like him, nod your head. And if you forgot how, he tells you to nod it up... then down.

This will go along nicely with Julian Lennons return to releasing music, when he returns late this summer with his yet untitled seventh album, his first new all new album since 1998's amazing Photograph Smile.
