[Edited 4/17/07 7:54am] Jesus. They sound almost identical. Hrmpf...I don't like that. I still prefer Tamia's track. I'm assuming you know the Tamia track is a cover, right? Mica Paris did it first. How can anyone honestly say these songs are similar? Totally different production concepts. AM's cut is built around that ill rhythm guitar, the very warm spare analog live feel of the snare drum and most of all AM singing her ass off as she has never done before or since. That record was one for the ages, is totally unique, and would have been VERY obvious if someone was ripping it off. Now, I can understand if somone was inspired rhythmically be the AM cut, and started out with that rhythmic idea when they were constructing the MC song. Sure, I'll by that. The same way Miles heard some shit Bird did and got an idea for his own shit. Not that we are talking Bird and Miles here, but you get the anology. Personally, this is one of the MC records that I love -back when she she did what she did best - what the fuck she was told to. I love both these cuts. I wish this Mariah had never gone off the deep end and tried to prove herself to the hip-hop crowd. She really was something in the early 90s. The backing music is pretty much exaclty the same!!! I love Mariah, but c/mon... if you just listen to the instrumental intro to the AM cut, ti's the backing riff to Make It Happen. MC obviously got into that groove and then created a new melody over it. that is how she apparently tends to write songs... her co-writer comes upw ith some chords on the piano and she creates the melody and writes the words. in this case, the chords were already written, apparently.

I recently aquired the Karen White cd,so I've been listening to it more. It could have easily been a Janet project. In retrospect it's really blatant. my phone is heavy

Yes, there is some similarity in chord structure, but the feel of these two songs is totally different. Like I said, whoever produced the MC track started oout with the chord structure from the AM track as an idea, but in my view they wwent somewhere very different with it. It's not like what Groove Theory did do "Mary Jane" by Rick James with "Tell Me". Nothing that blatant at all.

Look, I will always defend Mariah as far as her talent and musicianship.....a lot of poeple don't appreicate it cuz of how she acts/dresses sometimes.
But I have to say that the "Chord structure" as someone put it, is the the basically the whole groove.....it's clearly taken from the "I want to thank you" and used as the foundation of "Make it happen". Mariah clearly turned it into a new song by adding completely different melodies and other harmonic backing sections..... not to mention the lyrics. It's weird because from what I've read, you can only copyright a song in terms of it's melody and lyrics. Not the chord progressions. I can understand this to some degree, in that some chord progressoins are so universal.....e.g. the 12 bar blues is always I, IV, I, V, I. Yet in this case, it's almost more of a "riff" or "groove" that seems to have been "lifted". That must be a gray area, and I don't know if that can be grounds for a lawsuit. I tried to look up the song on the copyright database but for some reason I couldn't find any of the tracks for Emotions album.
